I'm wondering if one of GZ's edge-terminated designs like the MKIV might be more similar to the u89 than the MKI? I really don't know how Neumann's edge-terminated capsule is compared to a CK12, but I'm curious what the differences and similarities might be.

Regardless, a Warbler MKI makes for a great affordable all-purpose mic.

I'm confident though you'll still dig one of the MKI's...

I had no idea AA made these. Are they pretty close to a U89?

Unless you need multi-pattern, TLM 193, is also fine choice.

Haven't heard one yet.
Found this out via another GS member posting.
I have faith in Dave Thomas, in any event.

Warbler mk6

So I have been looking for an upgrade coming from AA custom build to be like the cm800t I thought was dark sounding and didn't have that pop now I use a custom built mxl v67 with modded internals I've been debating on the warbler mk6 I just want something close to the Sony c800g in the 1000$ budget please help in using an Antelope zen as my interface and 1073 preamp

I bought the capsule from microphone parts and asked him if he would finish the job for me? But, since I had already replaced the transformer and the tube, he said he would only work on a mic with a full set of his replacement parts.

From what I'v read in the threads, Michael Jolly retired.
I tried to contact Jim Williams on his website about a month ago, but never heard anything back.
Chris at Barbaric Amplification will help you out I'm sure.

If you decide not to grab a 3U Audio mic, tell Chris at Barbaric Amplification you have $1000 and want the nearest thing to the Sony he can build for that. He'll get you close I think.

I can't say, I have no experience of it, although I'm sure it will be a good mic.

I do and it's a good mic for the money but It's not a C800G.

A couple of people have gotten the GZ800 tube mic and been extremely happy with it. Here's a demo: (He also makes a FET version.)

Dave just got back to me and said it was a designation given to the prototype of what became the CM800T. The name derived from a CM48T template with an AK89 capsule.

No wonder that doggone thing sounds so good!
It was a C800G soundalike, in U89 clothing.
Or is that a U89 soundalike, in Sony clothing?

2nd update from Dave and his wizardry: he said he could get the frequency response in the ballpark by modding the CM414 design.

You could also PM here at GS.
IIRC he stopped working on microphones.

You may also contact Chad @ Signal Arts.
There's a possibility he might still be modding my Warm model also. (He works on the tube 47 version,)
Chris

Thanks. PM'd a few days ago.. Don't recall seeing a phone#.. I'll look again.

I did a quick search for a Mic Tech in the NYC area, but surprisingly didn't find one.. Maybe someone knows of one??

I wouldn't mind saving a few bucks on shipping or even drive it there myself, especially if they will require the power supply to be sent...

Otherwise, I'll give Chad a shot..

Thanks again, Chris!

Awesome sounds great thank you for the input , I'm not sure if he's still making the GZ800 I have asked about it and he hasn't responded, what would be the price difference between tube or fet if I could get the tube I would, and another thing I'm also thinking is would I come close to that c800g sound with a modded Apex 460 with a brighter tube and 8:1 transformer ccd follower kept in

Interesting, I actually had Dave clone a cm800t out of a cv12 I once had with a rewire for a 5654w tube as he uses in that mic and a K89 capsule which I still have.. But sadly not sure if something wasn't wired correctly or something it sounded really dark, I wanted to get it fixed but prices shipping up to Canada are scary now 🇨🇦😱 if you have any cm800t vocal samples would be awesome shoot them this way please
