Headphones for drum tracking

Hey guys,

I recently had a go at tracking some drums, and it went great, apart from the headphones I was using for tracking. I just couldn't get the volume out of them, the drummer couldn't hear the click over the sound of his kit.

I'm currently using some Sennheiser EH150s, could you suggest something better? I'm looking for something loud and affordable and it doesn't have to have a particularly flat frequency response, you just have to be able to hear the music.

They're a little out of my price range, there's no $ - Β£ price break, so they're still Β£160, I'm looking for sub Β£100 or even Β£50 if I can.

Those Vic Firth headphones are great for isolation. They let the right amount of high end through to still make the drums sound punchy/defined. However, the drivers are garbage. I gutted mine (easily) and mounted the drivers from a pair of 7506s. Best of both worlds.

Ultrasone HFI580. Spend the little bit of extra dough. It's worth it.

Firth's cans suck. You might as well wear earbuds underneath over-ear shooting range muffs. In fact, that works pretty darn well.

+1 for Extreme Iso headphones. Not the ex29's, too tight for comfort but the ex25's are great. I use them for drummers, bass players and guitarists for tracking. Vocals I use the Sony 7506's.

Beyer dt100. Even better isolation than dt770 and you can't destroy them.
I got mine used, but in great condition and still in waranty, for €60

I used to have some Audio Technica ATH M-40s for tracking and they were really good for the money.

Extreme isolations are great but Vic Firths often win out here for isolation + volume

It really does work well. I thought this was my own clever idea, but other folks here on GS have mentioned it as well.

Hey, if you thought of it before reading about it, then it was your clever idea! Other people just have the same clever ideas!

As an engineer, I love it for preventing click bleed. As a drummer, I hate it because why the hell would you want to block out so much of your instrument? The feel of your kit is 100% reliant on how well your cans are mixed. This only flies if I can set the mix myself. Hats on the left, please!
