I'm not happy about having the studio back in the house but it's not like I have much of a choice right now. Maybe in the future I'd have a studio in my house but it would have to be in a seperate building or at least have it's own doors, bathroom and whatever else. On a day off I like to get away from the studio and not have to think about it or see it. Especially if there's left over pizza boxes, trash and clean-up from the last few days session.

Here's the live area. The studio is in the shape of an "L" and the "live area" is behind and over your left shoulder as you face the console... such are the perils of a 'basement studio'.

Tim, is your place one big room or do you have seperation between the live room and control room?

It's one room in the shape of an "L". I'm in the process of designing/building a set of gobo's to help seperate the areas while tracking. There is a dry bar in the corner that I place amps behind (over and behind the right shoulder as you face the console) and an adjacent room for amps also. It can be a pain in the ass getting sounds but I make it work. I do the old track a little then adjust thing. I'm used to the room so I zero in pretty quick... my soul for a real space!

I worked like that for way too long in the first incarnation of my studio. It's do-able for most things, but when you get into critical mike placement decisions etc., it's a real mother****er. My heart goes out to you... and bless your heart for making it work!!

fuuck limitations.

I have two seperate rooms down here and two closets I use for iso booths. Everything has hollow core doors and standard 2x4 walls with one layer of sheetrock on each side. What can I say? It was built that way when we moved into the house. Drums aren't too bad but guitars? Man, I'd love to have more isolation from them.

Yeah, it's an absolute drag working in a one room setup. I've considered cutting the space up but haven't been able to layout something I like without ending up with a control room not big enough to change your mind in. I think gobo's will help some what without commiting to permanent changes in the room but we'll see. Until I can float the rent for (and find!) a decent commercial space I'll just have to make do.

Jay, are your guitars leaking into the drums or your control room? When I have to drop an amp behind the bar I usualy try and turn the amp down. I was very surprised with the tone you can get out of an amp at lower vol's. Of course that doesn't always fly but sometimes it's cool. If I need power tube OD at lower vol's I'll fire up the HotPlate... great ****ing tool IMHO!

Sorry for getting off topic here... so who's out front in this here competition? rollz rollz

The guitars leak into the control room (actually area) but not into the live room unless the amps are really really loud. I try to turn them down as much as I can but sometimes I can't do it for tonal or political reasons. Basicly, the iso's are kind of behind the control room with the live room on the other end. So the control room is kind of in the middle. It's a little hard to explain.

Speaking of the Hot Plate, does anyone know where I can get one for a good price? I just got my Sound City 120 back and now it sounds 150% better. But, since it's 120 watts with 6 EL34's (Mullards no less ) it'll knock you through the back wall by the time it distorts. But when it does it sounds pretty freakin' good.

On Empty V (read: MTV) I saw Tommy Lee's home studio. He had a fully functioning Starbucks put in.

Looks like Mr Wagener had a fully staffed Hooters put in.

You hit the nail right on the head

The band was Hair Of The Dog and the song was called "Mokur Jahoobees". We shot a video for that song (meant to be on an extended/enhanced (?) CD). A friend of mine worked at Hooters at the time and she brought along some friends for the video shoot. The band still talks about that day... heh

Just finished a new commercial facility away from home, but "Caffeine Trax" below (in my basement) has seen alot of action! There's an iso booth to the right of the console, which was built under the stairs coming down.

Control room:

Oh, and it's not in the basement, but at the top of the stairs from there. When I built the house I pre-wired the walls and have a patch panel at the top of the basement stairs, normalled to a AD2022 for the Grand Piano. The ceiling is vaulted two story above it...sounds amazing.

No excuses!!! I shrinky-dinked 'em so people won't have to scroll.

Nice rooms though. How big are they? The drum room looks a bit small for a full band to stand in. Still looks nice though.

Thanks Jay...(did you say, "Shrinkage"? hehe)

The drum / live room is 18 x 14 with 8" suspended ceiling / acoustic tiles. There are some standing wave issues that I defeat with 2x4 acoustic tiles strategically placed.

Control Room was the same size, before I build the room in a room. I went, unknowningly, for the 60's "dead" room in my control room (all those walls are like pillows, good for drunk drummers to bang their head on) and it is 'freaky' dead.

The piano room is actually a large living room, probably 20x24 with about 24' high ceilings.

Note: I noticed some increbidly sweet looking rooms...was "between a rock and a hard disc place" low budget kept in mind in the rules? :P I did both rooms and iso for around $15,000 US. Hehe anyway some sweet rooms in this thread.

Need....more....time...

I'm building as fast as I can. If I build any harder she will blow.

Can't you just extend the contest a little? Or are you gonna give me points for a half built basement studio?

studio's that have room for Hooters staff do not qualify as basement studio's in my book. Get that man out of here! (Leave the girls, though )

I'm in the same boat. I won't be done until November though, and that may be wishful thinking.

Let's just say that I have complete leakage between the control and tracking rooms right now.

Oh well....maybe next year.
