Anyone add a slave drive to the D3200?

I have a D3200 with a bad USB interface. The hard drive is a common IDE so in theory you should be able to add a second drive as a slave (given proper cables and jumper settings). The D16 did a nice job of recognizing additional SCSI drives, I'm just wondering if anyone has tried something like this with the D3200. If it worked, I'd use an IDE drive simulator to add a CF or perhaps a female USB for a thumb drive which could be much easier to use than the "PC" drive anyway. The technology should be possible, just a question of the D3200 recognizing the second hard drive ...
