rme adi 2 vs mbox and fw1814

Hi guys.

Currently using mbox (1) and maudio fw1814 and wondering whether using an ADI2 may improve things?

I often record a stereo pair into the laptop and finding that with the mbox in particular the imaging is quite fuzzy.

However, I have also read the in fact the 1814 converters aren't that bad.

Any opinions?

I used it when I owned an Mbox. While it's not a magic bullet, I did notice a difference for the better when I clocked and converted with the ADI-2. Certainly a better piece of gear than the m box converters. As far as the maudio fw1814, I have not heard this so I can't comment on the difference. I now use the RME ADI-2 with a 2 channel mic pre for two more channels and an external clock in my Digi 002R.....sounds great.

Thanks for your reply.

I have to confess that I tried a shootout the other day between the m-audio, mbox, an old m-audio delta and the behringer ada8000 (all on d/a only).

Ashamed to admit I couldn't really discern any major difference and when I thought I did I went back and contradicted myself. :-) Maybe my ears still need work....

I've read alot about people changing converters with "night and day" differences.

Was wondering if it really was like that....

Maybe its more evident on a/d?

Just out of interest what 2 channel pre do you have?

yeah im an rme adi-2 owner also just got it last week and man this thing is super super clean, i also use this with the rme 9652 was an ex maudio user. The onther diff is youll have to get used from the coloration of the maudio pre's to the pristine ness of the adi-2

M-Box and m-audio are likley similar, a 002 is better than any m-audio, an RME is better than a 002.

you can debate if a different brand is going to do you better than an RME but an RME will make a noticable difference over what you are currently using.

OK then...will the RME converter outperform the AD/DA in my Masterlink? I know the "higher-end" converters will ( tried it). But based on cost, will the RME ADI-2 be a step up? Thanks..
