Any fans of Justin Broadrick's work? Godflesh/Jesu?

Just curious. I see "poll" type posts from time to time, and wondered what you guys think. He's a big influence of mine, for many reasons

Thanks!

Hey, someone responded!!!
Thanks, I appreciate it.
With all the sort of poll type post, I thought it might be useful.
I really admire his work, been listening since Streetcleaner.
Always loved the nasty bass tone, and how it lucked in with the kick of the drum machine. And, of course, his DIY attitude.
Pure was done on a 8-track portastudio, I think!
I mean, it isnt Sgt Peppers, but still.
With all the side projects he's done, like Techno Animal, I am shocked this guy doesnt get more respect.

I know, I know..he kinda mines the same territory, noisy, slow tunes.
But, he's pretty much the reason I wanted to play guitar (badly) and learn to engineer.

I'm off my soapbox.

But, any ideas about the basses?
How he got that distorted sound, distorted always seems to have a fizzy distorted sound riding on top of the real bass tone.

And, Jesu...he's gotta be EQ'ing or using some sort of low frequency exciter, or someting.

But, nice to meet another JK fan!

Heya,

Here's an interview with Justin where talks about his setup for Jesu:

http://www.maelstrom.nu/ezine/complete_iss39.htm (scroll down a bit)

It's pretty informative!

Quote:
Maelstrom: Have you tried the Bass POD?

Justin Broadrick: No, but the bass player has been considering that. He uses the same setup we used with Godflesh, but with Godflesh we would tune between C sharp and B, and all of Jesu is in A, so he bought a 5-string bass, which has really helped the tone. But he still uses an old Boss Heavy Metal pedal and runs it through an Ampeg. We recorded the bass for the Jesu album the old fashioned way in about two days, and then I spent two months after that ****ing with the recordings. Originally the tone was pretty bass-less. It had the dirt we wanted, but none of the wave whatsoever. I did a lot eq-wise; I think I put that through the Avalon, as well. It’s not built for bass, but who cares?
