Which Gear are Must Haves?

I am a just starting and would like to know what gear is essential. What does everyone have to have in their rack at minimum? I am not doing any commercial stuff, just trying to make quality music. Thanks is advance.

I don't own a "rack" really.

Use a Firepod to go in/out of the box, use Samplitude for software, and for effects I use a lot of free plugins + the Samplitude ones (which are pretty nice).

Right now it's just a few cheap mics, two stands, and a pop filter.

But such a broad question deserves a broad answer: "quality music" overwhelmingly comes from your abilities (to play, to use mics, to compress, to mix, etc) and not your gear.

Something for listening ( headphones, monitors, etc )
Something for recording ( mic )
Something for going into/out the computer ( soundcard )

There are so many options that all of them can be good.

for what styles of music?

hip hop then maybe an akai
dance maybe a virus TI

mic u87/ sm58 /

apogee converters
protools hd3
this might go on forever.

just get a good mic (u87)and preamp(neve clone), and great monitors(genelecs, 1k bucks and up for each.
and practice a lot and have a good recording space.
electronic music (hiphop also included) get a good synth , analog if you can.
modular even better. keep samplers virtual , much easier to edit.
get a great midi controller, maybe double it as asynth.

Well you have a good start already.

-A good or better sound card with break out box to suit budget.
-Midi capability either as part of the sound card or more serious such as a Unitor 8 mk2. I prefer not to use USB for this personally.
-Separate audio drive
-Up to date Logic
-Midi keyboard controller
-Recycle + ableton Live 5 as and when possible
-Additional plugin synths to buy over time.
-The best mic and preamp you can afford.
- Good or better speakers (powered monitors perhaps) and good headphones for recording and some editing jobs.
-Additional plugin dynamics/EQ and FX as and when possible.
-a varied sound library collected over time.
