Anyone recording some tracks to 4-track for character?

Are any of you recording some of your tracks on 4-tracks for character and then into your DAW for mixing?

How is it working out for you?

I'm considering it as an alternative to plugins. I used to have an old Tascam 4-track many years ago and really liked the sound.

Any comments?

Just to clarify, I'm talking about cassette 4-tracks.

I was using my four track for a while before I got a laptop and firewire device. I would track bass/drums/guitar at a friend's house then transfer those tracks to my computer via MOTU2408mk2, then continue to overdub. It worked well, and usually those tracks sounded good. One of the things I did was use a Mackie 1402 for preamps instead of the built in ones. I really prefer using my Black Lion Audio Modded MOTU828mk2 and a laptop instead though. It is easier and sounds better.

I just sold a half-broken 424 mkII on Ebay, but had really wished it still worked to do exactly what you're talking about. I would certainly intend to use my ibook & firepod for most stuff, but I liked the way drums or bass sounded on the portastudio.
