CAD M179 vs. Trion 8000?

Hey guys,

I'm starting up a little home recording setup with an Apogee Duet, an SM57, and some sort of condenser mic. I've heard good things about the low end CAD mics and am wondering if it's worth it to spend a few extra bucks on the Trion 8000. What are the differences between the two? I'd probably be recording mainly both male and female (on the lower side) vox and less often acoustic guitar and some random odds and ends. I'm also open to other suggestions, but the multi-pattern options on these two are pretty appealing.

The M-179 has a continuously variable pattern ( a rotary knob that goes from figure 8 thru cardioid to omnidirectional )...very handy mic with many "voices" or "colors" due to the variability of the pattern...

I can't speak to the Trion, but I have 3 M179's that I am very happy with. I use them mainly as Drum OH's, my Tom sound has never been this nice, punchy, full, good. I've used one on Acoustic guitar with nice results, and the Variable pattern is quite cool for dealing with less than stellar rooms, lends a bit more flexibility for such an inexpensive mic.

I have 2 m179's that I pulled out of the closet recently for the first time in......forever to use as room mics for recording a drum set and they sounded great, I think they have a pretty low floor noise. Don't know about the other choice but these seem to be ok.

outside of the pattern differences, if any, The Trion is a very bright mic. I haven't had the M179 but I am told it is fairly natural.

The Trion is a fine mic. I would def swap out the tube for a Mullard EF95 though. Take the mic to new heights. The M179 is just utility mic. Sounds great on drums, even clean guitars and bass cabs. On Vocals it's hella boring though. The Trion with the swapped out tube is a whole lot more used for vocals here.

Wish I'd thought to swap tubes before dumping it. Oh well.
