can home sub be used in a studio?

I found a cool JBL sub (Powered) for $100 today.
Its built in canada not china so I was thinking it would make a good budget sub.

Can I just mod the connections and use the sub with studio speakers (Powered XLR and phono)

I dont have room treatment or any of that that, Im low end.

I remeber reading that CLA uses a cheap sub with his NS-10's.

He says "plus an old Infinity 12-inch subwoofer that cost me $300". If it works, it works!

Definitely, just be aware of the way your room is likely to respond to it in the form of deeper nulls and higher peaks. Also, you have to crossover somehow between your mains and the sub.

I've used a Velodyne 10" sub for years (for major label and indie mixes). Is there better out there? Sure. Does it work well? Yup. Just make sure you have a switch that you can use to turn it off (you can get an extension cord that has a foot switch on it from Target!). I mix with mine off most of the time, then switch it one occasionally for checking the weight of the nether regions :-) I like to compose music with it on cuz it rocks.
