Neumann U87 - dented grill, no box. $1000 at a pawn shop with shock mount.

Mojave MA-200 - I have a pair of these. One was $500 on eBay the other was $650 locally

Mojave MA-201 - $400 eBay

Earthworks SR-69, SR-77, QTC-1 - traded a Zemaitis guitar I paid $300 for

Royer R-10 (unmatched pair) $400 each used on Reverb

EV CS15E - bought at online auction with a couple Turner 57 style mics for $100

Telefunken Drum Package - 2 M-80s, M-81 and kick mic - full pop, this was expensive but worth it because I use them on drums, guitars, bass amp, etc....

It took me over ten years to get here and I've bought and sold some other mics to arrive here.

Now I pretty much have everything I need for what I do. Mics are cool and I would love to have more but I would say buy the best you can afford and don't be afraid to look for deals.

I can say it's a lot easier to record with better mics (IMHO/YMMV).
I'll give you $1,001 dollars for the U87.

For real though I think it depends on the mics. It's definitely easier to record with something like a used AT4040 or an Oktava MK-319 or MK-220 than the MXL mics or other $200-300 mics. The ones I've used that I like are the CAD M179 (seriously at $200 it's a steal), Oktava MK-220, Line Audio CM4s, and the Oktava MK-012. If you can get used AT4053Bs I've heard they can go for really cheap, the like $200. Alternatively the AKG Blueline mics are like $150 used too. While I'm personally not the biggest fan of the current C414s, the C414 B-XLS I've seen go for like $400 USED, same with the AT4050. They might not be a U87, but I think any of the mics I mentioned should be very good.

Ssshhh... I've teased Klaus for years on this.
(I'm afraid he might take us up! )

This is the "Free Bird" of microphone enhancement requests!!!

There have been live bands who've done it note for note-upon drunken request.
Gasp!

Here for the gear

Currently runnin this Live setup on my 5pc band in the studio for pre-production:

DRUMS (1960 Ludwig)
Kick-in - Beta 52 -> API 312
Kick-out - CAD M179 -> API 312
Snare Top - sm57 -> API 312
Snare Btm - sm57 -> API 312
Rack Tom - CAD M179 -> ASP880
Floor Tom - CAD M179 -> ASP880
Mono OH - Beyer m160 -> WA73
Stairwell - ISK Little Gem (omni) -> ASP880

BASS - 1969 Ampeg B25
Cab - D112 -> ART Trans X
DI - UA Solo 610

ELECTRIC GTR 1
1966 Fender Princeton Reverb - SM57 -> UAD 1073

ELECTRIC GT2 2
1968 Fender Super Reverb - e906 -> UAD 1073

ELECTRIC GTR 3
1972 Fender Super Reverb - sm57 -> UAD 1073

ACOUSTIC GTR 1
2005 Gibson J45 - C414xlii -> UA 710 Twinfinity
DI - Radial JDI

ACOUSTIC GTR 2
1973 Gibson Southern Jumbo Deluxe - DI - Radial JDI

VOCALS

lead - sm7 -> UAD 1073
BG1 - e945 -> UAD 1073
BG2 - ISK ICDM -> ASP880
BG2 - ISK ICDM -> ASP880

Notes:

1) Using Apollos + ASP880 for conversion.
2) Stereo Organ & Stereo Piano running direct into X32 then adat into Apollo twin. Sending the Apollos and ASP880 via adat into the X32 which we use for headphones
3) CAD M179s are the best bang for your buck mic ever. Beats out my 421u4s on Toms almost everytime.
4) ISK little gem - another cheap mic that beat out my c451b is hanging 16 ft from the floor in a door-less stairwell connected to live room.
5) ISK ICDMs sound significantly better than our sm58’s we tour with and the cymbal bleed is sweeter imo.
6) All 5 of us are in the same room, Amps are all separately isolated, Gobos around the Acoustic guys. Gobos around the drums and cloud above.
7) the J45 (tuned D standard) is very dark/warm, the c414xlii adds a bit of air to it

After months of trial and error, this appears to be the ideal setup for what we’re working with and how we’re working. Realized workflow is king. Even 5 min to set something up kills the vibe. The isolation, mic choice and placement allows for a “Turn it on and get along” type of session. Recording all the tracks live, bounce it and air drop it to the bands phones without having to mix/edit, all while having it sound good was the goal. Keeps productivity “high” and let’s us be also

I don't run a studio but rather have a small collection to record myself and select others:

(1) AKG C414 B-ULS
(1) Beyerdynamic M160
(1) Mojave MA-300
(1) Shure SM7B
(2) Shure SM57
(2) Soyuz 013 FET

Been thinking about a Sennheiser MD-421 N lately and someday I'd like to add a good 47 clone like a Wunder or Heiserman, maybe a U87 just for future client value. As you can tell, I tend to like darker mics.

Not hankering for anything per se, but the next few years will probably bring:

DIY Dany Bouchard C12 clone w/Campbell capsule
DIY Dany Bouchard U47 clone w/M7 capsule
NoHype LRM-2B (x2)
Line Audio Omni1

…and that’s probably it forever. If Beyerdynamic ever rereleases the M380, I suppose that will also make the list; I may spring for an M130 and/or a Coles 4038 at some point, too. That said, I’m middle aged & never opening a studio, so my future mic (& mic preamp) purchases are finally starting to feel limited by that logic.

I will never ever place my 54 closer than overhead position on any drum set. And even that I’ve only done a few times, as a center mic for a 3 mic overhead capture on larger kits with lots of cymbals spread out on soft chops drummers. I’m not going to unnecessarily subject that precious nickel-plated diaphragm to high SPL’s. I haven’t thought of trying it on guitar cab. I’ve used tube mics (VM1, C37A, Blue Bottle) next to a dynamic mic on high-gain guitar rigs with good results before but that ain’t never gonna happen with the 54.

It really shines on acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, upright bass, violins (freaking amazing) and piano.

Beatles used it a lot on snare bottom, Ken Scott used it on snare top a lot too. Pretty sure it was a staple in the London studios in the 60s/70s.

Between the two speakers on an AC30 is how the Beatles got their pre '64 guitar sound... but I would be cautious too, seeing what they go for now.

I’ll use mine on snare if you’re willing to pay for a replacement that’s got an original diaphragm, is unmodded and in museum condition like mine. The price for has gone up just a hair since those days.
