Crushing! Good locker. Great music awaits.

If I were starting over, I'd probably go for an Austrian OC818 first... from everything I can tell, that might the ultimate bargain in useful mics in the current age. Top-shelf capsule made by a true industry veteran, unprecedented polar flexibility, great sound, affordable price tag.

An update - lately, I have been very into older CAD mics - the Equitek II is my most recent piece of awesome… Using the shock mount from my MXL 990 for now. Anyone have the proper mount for the Equitek II (or E100 or E200) they want to sell?

Edit - just got the mount for the Equitek II!



And also came into a second E100…



They sound FANTASTIC!

I have a Blue Spark! Run it though my trusty 1st gen 2i2, my keyboard and mouse sound amazing reflecting off the 10x12 bedroom walls.

Considering an OC818 pair to go with a new 3rd gen 18i20, maybe a couple Fathead IIs (their HQ is literally like a mile from me! Whoa) and a small army of SDCs (Oktava, KSM141, sE8? CM4? Line Audio omnis?). Probably one or two 635a's and 57s. All for acoustic instruments, no vox no kits. Yet. Percussion, yes.

My first microphone when I started learning to record was an AT3035.

That was a solid microphone. I regret selling it to get the Studio Projects C1.

The hype back in the day was that the C1 sounded like a Neumann u87.

I've never owned a Neumann u87. But there's no way that's what a u87 sounds like.

EDIT:
cancelled my order on the Mojave MA-300's as I felt it was too much money for what it is: a very "clean" sounding multipattern tube mic which seems to have a similar "color" to my TLM102 and FET47.
It just seemed silly to try to buy two tube mics for the price I should be spending on one. Especially considering I'm looking for a serious increase in quality & character, and now maybe doubling my budget and limiting myself to one mic seems like the superior choice.
This would put a lot of great U47/U67/U87 clones in my "price range". Instead of spending $3k on two "decent" tube mics, I can spend that amount on just one mic that'll kick some serious ass! I also like the idea of a Tonelux JC37, their Sony C37 clone.. and Soyuz has been on my radar for years. But their 017 tube mic is too expensive.
$4 thousand bucks is just... too. much. for. a. microphone.
(I record my own music and rarely have clients, so the mic wouldn't exactly "pay itself off" very quickly)

Welp... had a microphone stolen from us (AKG C12vr serial number #152 , so if anyone sees it pop up on resale let me know!.. they failed to take the cable and power supply though lol).

Rocking a CU-29 for rap vocals which was a great compliment to the C12vr... anyone got ideas to compliment that now in the $2K range.. a brighter type mic sorta like the C12vr?

OC818? There are a few c12-style capsule mics I forget about, but Mojaves are also bright. mk-105 lol, and 251 also strikes me as a good rap mic.

Sorry to hear about your C12VR... Esp. as you provided a serial number, I hope it's spotted soon and can be returned to you in a matter of months.

-Bought a Deity S-Mic 2S that I knew I wanted to return within minutes of plugging it in, crazy high self noise (not the advertises 15 dBA, it was louder than mics with 24 dBA noise) and terrible rejection
-Not a mic but I have a Triton Fethead Phantom for my lower output condensers

Probably gonna add some of the Mic Booster Clippy lavs soon. Also considering some of the T power Sennheiser MKH mics as a way to get legit cheap ones. Maybe also a couple Behringer B5s because those are surprisingly good sounding for the price and have an omni cap in addition to the cardioid.

From my experience, I wouldn’t classify the Mojave’s as bright - I shot out the MA-300 against the copperhead and they sounded practically identical (both 67 style capsules), and both amazing mics. The Mojave 201 is stupidly awesome - it sounds balanced and ever so slightly present, with this gentle bell lift through the upper mids that helps it cut through in a mic (that’s in comparison to an 87).
The brightest of the Mojave’s is the MA-1000 - but it doesn’t feel bright - but rather detailed in the highs. For $2k you can cop one used - that is an edge-terminated CK12 style capsule, so will give you closed to C12VR.
I’ve ended up buying (and then selling) a lot of mics, and over time the Mojave’s have become my benchmark for sound. They’re not just great budget mics - they’re great mics period! I luv my Mojave’s so I always got to jump in and share my experience when I hear someone reference them in passing.

Of course, there are MANY great mics out there, and YMMV - but that’s the fun of it!

Still looking for a 47 style mic. My bet is on Martin Kantola from Nordic Audio Labs. His NU-100k looks killer too.

PS - the Chandler REDD is another mic I like that fits this category - it’s similar(ish) to the MA-1000, but 2x the price. Sweet mic tho.

I've sold off the last of my name brand LDCs (a 414B-ULS) and now am entirely using my own builds and mods. I have a constantly changing collection of Center and Edge Terminated capsule mics in both Tranformer-coupled and Transformerless circuit configs. Besides that, I have the usual drawer full of '57s and other stuff like that.
