I’m going to treat more around piano and ceiling since I think these babies need better acoustic treatments to work better..

Some vocals I and singer liked it a lot. I’m going to use this as main vocal mic until I get wa-251 moded.
Hello, and thank you! I appreciate your answer and it gave me a lot to think about.

And I think I will continue to invest in acoustic treatment before I invest in a big mic purchase.

Ha! My “locker” is two drawers. I’m not really for want of more mics - I think I have what’s necessary, just wish I knew how to use them a lot better.

SM57 X 2 - Cabinets, BG vocals.

SM 81 X 2 - OH, hats, acoustic guitars. You can record a great vocal on them, just don’t tell Neumann that.

Bumblebee DIY ribbon X2 - recorderman on a kit, that and a kick mic and it’s pretty nice. Guitar cabs. Room mics for anything, guitars, vocals, etc, the poor man’s 121, IMO(like $250 a pop)

Blue Bluebird with Mic Parts U47 style capsule - when you want a bit of a presence bump on a vocal. The original capsule is nasty.

Mic Parts DIY U87 kit. Nice and clean, sounds very much like a U87, but no attenuator so it needs to be like 6’ away from a kit. I did a comparison video in which most were hard pressed to tell the diff.

Senn 609 - Cabs, when you want it to stick out a bit more. SM57 seems to blend in a mix more. I have been very happy with this mic on a snare. Like a 57 but a bit more scooped.

Beta 91 + kick =KABOOM

Beta 58 - when you want major amounts of isolation on any source. If you’re going to record live off the floor just rent a dozen of these bad boys, close mic everything, and boom, done. IMO a dynamic with superior rejection beats a condenser picking up every noise in every corner of the room any day. YMMV.

OM5 - see Beta 58 but not quite as good rejection, and has a bump that sounds fantastic live, not so sure about in a studio. Further experimentation required.

Those cheap APEX ribbon mics - rooms, on a cabinet with a 57, I once did a vocal with them...

You can probably tell that I dig the sound of Oktava mics. I’m also a big fan of TechZone LDCs. Very, very underrated in my humble estimation.
