Exhibition, Messe etc.
Loads of people visiting the halls and stands.
Demo mics.
People singing through them one after the other.
Even the maker is there.
You sure want to have a conversation with him now you have the chance.
But there's noise coming from all directions, so you come in close to hear the guy and make yourself heard.
Well, maybe there was closed booth?
But still.

This was just a couple of months ago.
Could take a while before this sort of thing is possible or allowed again.
So Chris may have been among the last who got to meet Mark in the wild and under these conditions.
I know that is not the worst of our concerns.
It simply crossed my mind.

Anyway, I guess this is not the right place, so back to the locker.

It's totally OK. (as you know too) It's great to meet those, who are passionate about what they help to create.

I keep coming into deals on Electro-Voice mics. Recent acquisitions:

1 x Electro-Voice RE-10
1 x Electro-Voice RE-16

And not here yet, but I just came into:
1 x Electro-Voice RE-18

The RE’s are super-cardioid and reject room noise very well. The 16 is brighter than the 10, and my understanding is the 18 will be kinda like the 16 but with dampeners and a hum buck circuit.

Dynamic super-cardioid are intriguing me lately. The RE-10 is vibey and spectacular on recording acoustic guitar (vocals, too). Also a Heil PR30 on acoustic is a bit fuller, but still excellent at room rejection.

I have an Electro-Voice 635a Omni, but it picks up way more room than I’d like.

Wish I had more time to play. Moving soon, and hoping to put super chunks in new home studio, so hopefully room noise will be moot.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Weave, I'm always within 3 inches, on an EV 635a. Here's a clip below, done in an untreaded room...
Chris
P.S. I did add some Plate reverb.

Sweet! Sounds great (as usual)!

I will definitely give the EV 635a another go after I move - I was pondering doing a cleanout and getting rid of some mics that don't seem to inspire at the moment, but since I am moving soon and will have a different space, have decided to wait it out and see how the new room works with what I have. Finally, instead of my box, I will have a rectangle. Maybe it will help.

I am feeling I can do 2 super chunks on the forward wall and I have a 12" deep 3' x 2' gobo bass trap for the back wall, so once my new space gets sorted, I am totally looking forward to trying our all my mic again and seeing how they do in the new space!

Moving - because I just got married! And the wife likes microphones, so I guess we are a good match!

And for what it's worth, chessparov2.0, I very much appreciate your willingness to share clips... It is very helpful and it kinda puts you out there (although you sing VERY well)!

Good music to all!

Here for the gear

sE Gemini II
sE Icis
sE R1
Ev RE11
Sontronics STC-1S matched pair
Sennheiser E865
AKG D7
Rode NT1A
AKG C1000S

Nothing flashy, but they all do their jobs well. Love the sE gear and have been using their mics for close to 15yrs. The RE11 is a one trick pony, but it's a very nice trick for certain tasks. The Sontronics are flat-out superb for very little money, the E865 is a decent live condenser, the D7 is my favourite live mic as it will handle anything from a whisper to massive SPLs without ever sounding less than musical.

My NT1A has earned its keep a thousand times over and is the mic I take on tour with me for demoing new material in hotel rooms/green rooms etc. I've owned it for 15yrs+ and it still punches way above its weight. It's made the cut for final vocals on a few tracks I've released over the years, it's not flashy but will always sound serviceable on 99% of sources.

The C1000S is terrific for knocking hooks into the wall in the studio for hanging pictures...

As of right now:

LDCs:
2x CAD M179
1x Behringer B2 Pro
2x iSK BM-600 (at least one will have the circuit rebuilt later, if not both)
1x AT4050

SDCs:
2x iSK Pearl (planning to get a couple more)
4x MK-012 (all hypercardioid, two are Chinese bodies with Russian capsules)
1x Superlux ECM999 omni measurement mics
(I may buy some Behringer B5s after I go back to work)
*1x Deity S-Mic 2
*1x Synco Mic D2 (been meaning to get rid of this one, might just use it for a back up)
(asterisked ones are shotgun mics, including them because they use small capsules)

Dynamics:
1x iSK ICDM

Some stuff was sold off, or broke (due to user error on my part, didn't secure a stand arm enough, a couple things died in modding attempts)

How's the 797 CR998? I've considered some of their mics. I'm really interested in the massive shotgun mic they make. But a lot of their SDCs and multipattern LDCs have higher self noise than I care for (plus the NT2S would be bright af).

This mic is from around 2004, so I'm not sure they even make them anymore. It was their flagship. Quiet and smooth, it has a nice Neumann style capsule, nice transformer, Wima caps, etc.

I have not encountered any of their recent stuff, so not sure what to expect.

Good luck on the search!

Couldn't resist adding one of those rogues' gallery shots, though the lighting is a little funky:

Top row: 2x Earthworks QTC-1, 2x AT 4051b, Beyer M260, 2x EV ND468, 2x Shure SM57, 4x Shure SM58

Middle row: Soundelux U195, AT 4047, Sennheiser MD441, Vanguard V-13, 2x AT 4040, AKG D112

Bottom row (aka the "deep bench"): 2x AT 33R, EV 635a, EV PL11, Sennheiser MD918, Nady SP5, AT DR-VX1, 2x EV 666 "Mark of the Beast" -- I've never actually used these, because I don't have the right connector, and they probably sound ghastly anyway. But they're fun to look at.

Interesting. I was basing my assumption on the sound sample at coutant.org, which sounds quite peaky in the mids and a bit bass-shy to my ears. Also perhaps on the looks -- they look like something salvaged from a WWII battlefield communications unit!

Would they be worth anything if they're working properly? I wonder if it would be worth jury-rigging a test cable just to verify that they're functional.

If I am recalling correctly, as I researched old EV mics for my own curiosity, gearslutz’ own Brent Hahn has talked quite favorably about the EV 666 here and there. Every time I see what’s available I find they are going for a bit more than I can justify at the moment, but I’d really like to try one someday...

The EV line historically, has a knack of having "sleepers". One of the newest, is the EV 767a IMHO.
