How do you feel about the Mesanovic? I’m considering the stereo model for drum overheads

I only picked it up recently and haven't really done much with it yet. I'm hoping it's a good option for acoustic guitar.

I'm doing pop, jazz, rock, punk, rap, singer/songwriter, classical, concerts, audiobooks, documentation, nature, soundtracks... lots of different stuff. I started caring for quality sound and buying stuff when somebody first said, my sound was good. It was about 10 years ago. Before I recorded everything with the same three t.bone mic's (SC450 and a pair of SC100's) :-)

Ok, here is a photo of my mic collection 2020:

Thank you, legato! I noticed a couple of years ago we are on a similar track, regarding sound and microphones.

Well, this is just a fraction of the mic's I owned and tried. Just the ones that served me well in various sessions. Just really good microphones, as I feel. Most not very expensive though. But I am happy

-Samson 8kit
-Samson CS mic

-2 radio shack dynamic mics
-1 mic that has zero branding, came free with a mic stand
-Shure unisphere pe588

Looking to sell off most of this and get:

-3 sm57s
-beta 52
-beta 91a
-atm230 3 pack
-2 ksm137s
-1 wa14
-1 m201
-2 nd46s

Ever use your M179 on vocals? I've been thinking about picking up a CAD mic.

I have. I liked it ok, but had a small room with various stages of poor room treatment at the time I got it. I started with a bare room. Then moving blankets. Then some cheap foam. Then six 2” 703 panels. And finally added a 10” thick gobo that has acted like a bass suck. The addition of the gobo was when things “shifted” and I started smiling more in my little room.

Zing!

I now have better mic options, so I haven’t messed with the M179 much - I need to pull it out and play some. The older mics that I used with ****tay and non-existent treatment all perform much better now.

Might be a no-****e-statement, but if you change your room treatment or move it around or anything, you might want to retry all your mics - they just might be better than they were without as much bass buildup.

Unfortunately, I usually don’t have the time to play in my music room as much as I would like.

FWIW - I am really liking the Warm WA-87. Only reason I have it is because Sweet had the black ones on clearance for $150 off and they had a demo knocking another $45 off. $405 for that mic? Sheeet yessss!

And to return to the question after much rambling on my part: I have, but not lately. It was ok at the time but I didn’t have much other than a 57 to compare it to and no room treatment to help actually know how the mic itself sounds.

Need more coffee...

If this hasn’t been informative I hope it has at least been entertaining.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1- Audix 7-mic drum pack
1- AT4040
1- Royer 121
2- old RCA SDC that no one can ID
2- P90
a few other weird mutts and odd balls including a weird Asian dynamic that sounds amazing for loud guitars with the 121 and another weird RCA that makes for a great room mic.

Oh, and 4-weird 57 $30 knock-offs that sound almost identical to an actual 57 but with a scoop around 2K. Found them on Ebay a few years back, took a gamble on one, ordered three more for that kind of money.

The best bang for the buck have been the 12 Gauge Microphones. The right preamp really wakes them up and they are my go-to for drum overheads Glyn Johns/Recorder Man set-up or for doubling anything else to add more dirt.

I record a lot of punk/metal/grind bands as well as jazz and blues.

One of these days I think I will sell some of these that don't see much use. I'd like a couple of classics.

Condensers:
2 sE Electronics X1 general purpose but mostly used for lows. Bass amps and outside kick.
1 Blue Bluebird Used mostly for vocals where I want the top end.
2 Oktava Mk012 (Cardioid capsule only) one of the most used mics. I use it on drum room and most acoustic instruments. considering an additional set with more capsules.

Dynamics:
1 Shure SM58S scratch vocals, backing vocals or as an extra SM57 when I need one more.
3 Shure SM57 very used mic. on guitar cabs and when I want more punch than the Oktava on acostics I use this mic
1 Shure SM7b used mostly for vocals where I want more punch
1 AKG D112 exclusive for kick drum.
2 Sennheiser MD421II more detailed and less punch than SM57. used when I need more body. Toms, bass amp, and sometimes on electric guitar when I do not have a dense mix.

Ribbons:
2 t.bone RB500 (I am considering a transformer upgrade) Bought these for drum room, but like them as overheads as I cannot afford a pair of 4038s.
