compressor upgrade

So I've got a dbx 266XL that's been sitting around and just for fun have tried it out inserted in my signal chain pre converter. I like the sound ok, but I was hoping for a bit more color. (And maybe a bit less artifacts) I don't want to spend a ton and I would like 2 channels.

Is the ART PRO VLA II a step up or horizontal? Any other options in that price range that are better than what I got? Any experiences with them?

Oh yeah. I got the 266 set up as best I could. (probably not the worlds best compressor guru, but certainly no stranger to how to properly use one.)
I was able to get it sounding ok for guitar. Bass was a little tougher. Lot's of artifacts on bass. Using all the controls it was tough to get it smooth and fat. Vocals were ok as long as I kept the ratio fairly low.

In searching I did find a couple of threads about the VLA II and some also mentioned the 266, but none were quite a direct comparison...However, the message was pretty clear that the VLA II is more of what I'm looking for.

edit: It certainly doesn't help that I also just got to try out an Innertube Atomic Squeeze Box. That comp was awesome and had character, but you couldn't hear it work. I know that the 266 is absolutely less-than-nothing in comparison, but it seems that the VLA (while totally different) might get me a bit closer without the investment required. Again I'm looking for more color and better control with less artifacts...

I have a Pro VLA (first edition) and I quite like it - especially for bass. It's got a very pleasing fatness and character to it. If that's what you want, it's a good call. I'd put the VLA, RNC, and RNLA all in the same bang-for-the-buck category.
