I used this for the first time for vocals today and my rhode NT1a broke.

It was awesome, the vocalist helped by being suprisingly good, i had to boost the gain on my mackie a bit but the end product was quite tasty.

Recommend it!

Give this a listen... sm57 going into art tps II with an old RCA 12ax7 in it.
Minimal EQ and I used a plug called Blockfish with a touch of delay.

Sounds great! I have an ART TPS II myself, and even though it gets a bad rap on this forum, I find it rather good. Did you notice an improvement by switching the 12AX7?

hh, glad to see we're talking about pre's because that's exactly what I was going to post about. What are some good, inexpensive, mic-pre's to pair with a 58/57?

FWIW, I have gotten great results with both 57/58 on vocals. But never with
a beta 58, I *HATE* that mic on vocals. Boxy, nasally, just bad.

My best vocal dynamic is a Beyer M300C. Picked it up for 80 bucks many
years ago. One of the best buys I ever made.

I believe the Black Crowes album "Lions" used a 57 or 58
for all or most of the vocals.

Never tried the ART. I've heard mixed reviews, though. The DMP3 is well regarded, though. You won't regret it. The next step up would be the GAP Pre 73, RNP, Grace 101, etc.

WOW! "Hi-end" sound out of not so "hi-end" gear? Damn, maybe my next loss of money is because of art-pre?

I've already used SM57 as a vocal mic , but I remember that I put a pop filter . BTW it was just perfect for that recording , a progressive rock band .

Now that is a good idea! Never thought about it.
I'll definitely try it ASAP

i started a thread on how much i hate the sm-57.

but i have one and use it. it has alot of uses. i think I'm just bored with it.
or i don't know what im doing. probably don't know what i'm doing.

no matter how much you dislike it you cannot take away it's live value ever.
snare seems to work well too.
the price is definitely right though, you really cannot lose.

I'm even giving thought too purchasing a few more. maybe the transformer mods on a few, then a few beta's, or a couple old unidyne's to get a little different flavor. who knows.

57 fan

Depending on the timbre of the singer's voice, the 57 can be an excellent vocal mic. I've done recordings with everything from the 57 to $2000 tube mics and most of the time, I prefer the SM57. Using the Antares mic modeler plugin when recording vocals definitely adds flexibility and enhancements. I wouldn't go so far as to say it makes the sm57 sound EXACTLY like a Neuman u87, but it certainly gives you more versatility. Even without the plugin, I often prefer it to more expensive mics, as I don't need to EQ. With most condenser mics, I have to cut 80Hz from my vocals, even when I sing in a high baritone/low tenor range. My voice just naturally has low frequencies to it and I find that mixing is much easier when I use the SM57 on vocals.

I tend to use it without the mic modeler plugin when recording acoustic guitar and often model different mics for different vocal tracks. Overall, it's definitely my #1 choice in that price range by far. From my understanding, the SM57 and SM58 are basically the same except for the outside shape. It really boils down to preference, the singer's natural tone, style of music, and overall production and mix. And, yes, I do know that many famous singers do indeed use the SM57 and SM58 in the studio.

"i prefer a 58 takes eq better"

"the only difference between a 57, and a 58 are the wind screen.... if you dont believe me order some replacement parts..... they are the same..."

I notice a difference too.

The wind screen makes a difference in the sound between 57 and 58. Dynamic mics can work for voices. Hell the biggest selling radio announcer mic in history is a dynamic mic. Anything can get the job done if the situation is correct for it.

SM57 vs SM58

Updated August 14, 2017
What are the real reasons an SM58 should be used for vocals, and an SM57 be used for instruments? Of course, everybody seems to use these mics as mentioned. No one has given me a convincing reason for this, other than 'That's just what you do- everyone does it this way'. Please ease my anxious mind!

The SM57 and SM58 microphones are based on the same cartridge design. The main difference is in the grille design. The SM58 was designed for vocal application and it uses a ball grille that acts as an effective pop filter. The SM57 was designed as an instrument microphone where a smaller grille size is preferred. In this application, pop and wind are not usually a concern.

The SM57 uses an integral resonator/grille assembly, where grille is actually a part of the cartridge. These two grille designs place the diaphragm of each microphone in a different acoustical environment. The distance from the top of the grille to the diaphragm is shorter on the SM57 compared to that of the SM58. This allows for a closer miking position with a more pronounced proximity effect. The different resonator/grille assembly design of the SM57 is also responsible for its slightly higher output above 5 kHz.
