Goldmike vs GAP Pre 73

Hi
Is there anybody on this great forum, with an opinion on what to buy:
2x GA Project Pre 73 or SPL Goldmike??
I need 2 channels, and both pre´s sounds interesant and fits my budget
Greetings

Never tried the GAP Pre 73 but I think the Sonora( Sontronics ) is more
interesting than the Goldmike(my opinion of course).
But you should try both to find your own conclusions.I bought
my first pre regarding magazine reviews(in this case a very good UK magazine)
but I found that the Voicemaster from Focusrite was...wasn´t nice for me.
Now I´m very happy with a Danking and a RidgeFarm GasCooker at my homestudio.
Regards.

I own the Goldmike and can honestly say it's a very nice pre for the money.
It's quiet and neutral with enough gain for most mics. I've recorded acoustic gtr and vocal (with 414s) with very nice results.

I haven't used the GA 73 but it looks like a nice pre. Not a tube pre though.
I guess that's where your decision lies. Tube or SS.

i'm sure the SPL is a very nice unit, but i wouldn't call it a tube pre per se.

I used a Goldmike for a while and liked it but I prefer the sound and flexibility of my ART MPA Gold.

The Goldmike is a good medium priced pre, not as nice my Langevin DVC or ISA 428 but definitely better than other pre's I've owned like TL Audio stuff and Joemeek imo...Looks purty tooheh

thanks

Thanks
I bought 2 GA project pre 73- and I am very happy. They are very colored, but I like it. Very nice on vocals and electric guitars.
I will search for the right medium priced/secondhand tube preamp to have both kinds of pre´s when my budget allows it again.

Received my pre 73 last week, very very happy indeed. The pre 73 and the EHX 12ay7 pres are to me the best sounding of SS and Valve pres for under £500. The EH sounds more pure and pleasing than the ART & spl for sure. I guess the extremely short signal path helps. Loving the DAV BG1 also. Im very interested in the gas cooker though. noisetree, is it possible for you to post a wav clip of the GC on vox / spoken word please? That would be great if you could!

Cheers,
Toby

From having used both the Goldmike and GAP PRE-73 I would choose the 2x PRE-73 however YMMV.

Never used a Goldmike, but holy crap that thing's ugly.

GAP 73s are cool. Not a Neve, but still cool.

Ditto, I even liked the MPA Gold more with its stock tubes. After the tube swap on the MPA Gold, the Goldmike (9844) just didn't cut it.

Saying that whilst I preferred the tone of the MPA Gold I found it to be the noisiest preamp I have tried (even with NOS Telefunken tubes).

I would choose the Goldmike over the ART MPA Gold overall because I found the MPA Gold too noisy!!

The GAP PRE-73 is my firm favorite!
