Setting up Vocalist (headphone mix)

what are some tricks (in the box reverb, etc) you guys have to get the vocalist to feel good when singing and to stay in tune?

lifting the bass in the mix to stay in tune?

and also what reverb in the box (plates)?

should their voice be pretty high in the cans?

I've had pretty good luck just getting the singer to sing the song a few times and then comp it together. Most of the vocalists I've worked with are very quick to mention if they're uncomfortable. And if they can't sing, well, Melodyne will help them sing.

Just dim the lights, get him/her to remove one headphone ear if they need to, and put on your best vocal coach hat.

Try writing a simple line in MIDI for the vocals with a long note instrument like cello or flute, and not a piano or guitar (or drum... wtf???) and let him sing while hearing it with all the mix.
then record him again without the line a few more times, and combine the best shots.

The point is that the singer would be less creative when singing with a midi line in the back, because he'll try to stick to that. but if you can combine the times you want the singer to really stick to the line, and the times you want him to mostly express himself and escape the frame, then i think you'll get much better results. (atleast with a decent singer.)
