I'm only just now even remotely happy with the stuff I've been doing...what really pisses me off is when somebody judges my level of work quality from something I did almost a decade and 6 figures ago (without having heard the current stuff). But I'm with Slipperman...lots of squirming, probably will always be like that to an extent. At least until I have absolutely perfect musicians with perfect arrangements recorded to 2 x 2" 16 track Studers through an API legacy with all Crane Song outboard.

"Are subscribing to a porn site?" she asks.

That took some explaining.

Here are some other topics we might want to reconsider.

Guy has an equipment failure:
"What happens when you go down?"

Guy gets equipment to work:
"Good news, guys, I got it up!"

Guy has problem getting equipment to fit (which is bad enough):
"The rack's fine, but how do you mount this?"

You get the picture.

I can't wait to see how you explain your "Aural Exciter with Big Bottom".

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Good one. Yes, I would need lots of 'splainin' on that one.

One a serious note: I think once you're satisfied with your work, you're done. And it might be great and warranted, but you're done. Sadly, I think artists are usually done before they're satisfied. But we do get a couple of seconds. I'll 'splain.

I'm new to recording as an engineer, but once I was walking down the street and some guy was playing my band's tape in his car. For two, maybe three seconds, I didn't realize it was me and thought, "Wow, that sounds good."

Was it good? Who knows? Obviously, we go into this hoping what we create will be good and our vision -- as Curve Dominant likes to talk about -- is good, if we can realize it. I think we can, for two seconds or so. Then we realize we made it and start looking for the flaws.

Thing is... isn't it cool? Isn't it cool to have access to what 20 years ago was absolutely impossible financially? Great or no, every day I'm grateful. I have 32 tracks available in my house. Amazing. To me, anyway.

One other thing.. If you suck, but everyone loves it, maybe you didn't suck as much as you thought.

I don't think anyone actually ever finishes a project or any work of art. You work for a while and reach a point where you say "It's good enough" then get onto the next project. I usually have to remind clients about that when they want to do tweak upon endless tweak. We could dump the reels into a DAW and edit everything up and spend weeks and months doing it, but does anyone really need to?

Check this out. About a year and a half ago I got a call from a drummer who's a pretty good friend of mine. He was hired by a girl I know to play on her record and work as a co-producer for it. We worked out a time frame and a budget and he went back to her and got the whole thing approved, all I needed was the start date. In the meantime, they decided that it would be worth it to bring his Adat's to the rehearsals and tape them to look for any problems with arrangments or whatever. Very slowly the rehearsal tapes have become the album, complete with overdubs and my drummer buddy is NOT happy about it. The album should be done by the end of the month (started a year and a half ago) and I'll probably be mixing it unless the artist has blown the whole budget and the drummer does it.

I was going to make a point with that...now I forget what it was.
