Dear god, I had to do a search. I had no idea that uad made a WINDOWS only interface.
Why?
I use a Presonus Studio 1824c, a couple synths, some rack gear etc, and a Mackie Designs CR1604.
With the 1824c, presonus has mixer software called universal control, like uads console. Unlike UAD, you can bypass mixer, which basically turns off their software and lets your DAW decide the routing. I always leave it disabled, but if you want to use the interface without a DAW, you can enable mixer and monitor. You can use this for jams you dont want to record. Just a a note, you cannot use the 1824c standalone, it has to be connected to a computer, I'm pretty sure this is true of most interfaces.
I dont know how you feel about UADs software, but I am no fan. It reminds me of every store trying to get you to install their app in order to buy food from them. The old way works, why are we making it harder?
This is from Sweetwater: "The iD Mixer software is tightly and elegantly integrated with the iD44 hardware, which streamlines the recording process by giving you complete control."
This just sounds like more middlemen to me.
But, if youre using UADs software and dont have any issues, maybe the Audient stuff won't be so bad?
The CR1604 definitely doesn't have onboard recording, something like a Behringer x32 might be more what youre looking for in that regard.
If you want the distortion, go with the original Mackie Designs, not the 1604vlz.
Idk about using this for gigs, for that you might want something like the behringer x32 or maybe a presonus studio live (idk the new models, I used an older FireWire one)
Anyways, it sounds like youve done some research and have a good idea.
Happy gear hunting!
Hey, thanks for the response!
I'm in agreeance about the UAD software, I just love their plugins. I would never have chosen the windows only version of the apollo, but it was given to me by a mate and I ain't gonna say no to a free apollo XD.
I had some Presonus when I first started years ago and it broke on me. I'm a little hesitant with Presonus since, but the 1824c seems to have everything I need...just might be a bit out of my price range atm.
I can't find any info on whether you can bypass the iDmixer software coming into your DAW, I'll probably have to do a bit more research on that.
Regarding the mixer, how do you find the CR1604 as your main outboard mixer? Have you had any issues with it?
I know they're old mixers and I know I'm probably gonna have to clean it/do a bit of light servicing myself, but I can see myself driving the board from time to time for sound design purposes. Just worried the circuits are gonna burn out too easily due to their age and I don't wanna pay an arm and a leg in shipping costs on eBay every time I need a new one
I'll probably have to get a seperate mixer I use for my live setups and something like the cr 1604 for my studio.
