good tom mics

I'm in need of advice.

I am piecing together a drum mic set. So far, i have an audix D6, an sm57, and two akg perception 200's( i liked the sound i got from one as an overhead, so i bought another) Please help. What would be some good tom mics? I like big drum sounds.

There's a lot of posts here. Look up towards the top of the screen and search for "toms" or "tom mics". I'll save you some time though...some popular choices, in no particular order.

MD 421
Studio Projects B1/B3
Audix D2, D4
Sennheiser e604
Shure Beta 56a

and you can always use 57's in a pinch.

Good luck!

421's are pretty industry standard. I just did a session yesterday where I used 421's on the rack toms and a experimented with a C-12A on the floor tom (and ended up using it there for the whole session). The C-12A sounded really nice on floor, IMO. And of course, the 421's sounded great too.

Another mic, that is a lot cheaper than 421's that sound nice on rack toms is the Audio-Technica ATM25. I have tried it on floor tom, but it seems to get a little boomy for my taste, though some others may like it for that purpose.

If you've never heard a good large diaphragm condenser mic on toms, you're in for a treat. A Neumann U-87 on a well-tuned drum can make you swear you've died and gone to tom heaven (a mythical place where the Pearl-y Gates are manned by Saint Tom, presumably). If you're on a budget, try a Shure KSM-44, an Audio-Technica AT4050, or even a RODE NT-1.

Or, from the completely opposite end of the spectrum, try Electro-Voice RE15's for your toms. They offer most of the benefits of a Sennheiser MD421 with a flatter top end and *much* less off-axis coloration. Smaller too, so they're easier to position.

Another vote for the 421. Hands down the best. THe cost is a factor though. I recently a/b a 421 and the audix D2,D4. The audix mic's were not bad. The 421 just made the tom come alive. It seemed the audix mics tend to crap out on the high end.

In case people don't know about the C12A, it is a large diaphragm condenser that looks more like a 414, rather than the original C12 design. So, yeah, large diaphragm condensers definitely kick ass on floor tom.

I get really good results with my D2's and D4's.....421's are very fine. I'm personally not a fan of 57's on toms....

got to go with the Sennheiser MD421!

I’m sure 90%+ of the people here could only choose one of mic for their toms, this would be it!

They also combo up with nicely with Royer R-121’s on guitar.

Beyer 201s. Cheaper than the 421, and just as "quality", although different.

To put it in terms that we slutz always seem to want put it in, I'm fairly sure that the vast majority of professionally tracked, major lable releases have used the 421s on toms.

They are as close to "industry standard" as we can get these days.

sennheiser e604's work for me. easy placement against bleed, not too expensive, handy mounts.
i guess the biggest problem here would be to get good drums tuned and played well enough.

if you have the possiblity be sure to check out mics otherwise used for kick drums like an akg d112 only on the floor tom together with other typical mics for the rack toms.. once i tried this setup with a d112 and two sm57's and it blended nicely giving an additonal not too separated flavor for the floor. i had no other choice at that time but it came out great.
