Happy accidents?

What kind of unforseen events have shaped something you were recording into... something else?

The result might have been way better than what preceded it, or so bad that it had to be used, but in any event, what was the difference?

Did the guitar player eat a bad skittle shortly before his take?

Did pissed off musicians make for a killer take??

Your stories here! ... ___________________

This is probably a very typical story but i thought i'd share.

One time i was recording this band and they INSISTED that they all play live even though my studio isn't exactly set up for that sort of thing (i was in a small house at the time). So i put the guitar amps in different rooms and ran cables into the drum room so they could see the drummer, etc.

But the singer/guitar player really wanted to sing too. So i just threw in some cheap radio shack mic (i was running out of mics..i used a lot on their guitar cabs and didn't plan on the vocals) on a stand right near the drums.

Well, we did the takes and the vocals were slammin! If i soloed the track there was a whole ****load of drum bleed but who cares..with everything mixed it sounded sooo good.

We tried overdubbing vocals just to compare and they weren't even close to what we captured.

For once, it meant less work for me!!!!

My favorite happy accident happened during a guitar solo. We were "constructing" the solo and I was punching in the second half after we "found" the first half. I punched a 16th note late. The result was a rhythmic figure of an 8th and two 16ths instead of two 8ths. It's perfectly in time and on the final mix.
