figure 8 sdc for low level recording of ac guitar ov's pecussion piano etc

Hi

I,m lookng for a multi pattern sdc that can be used for percussion, acoustic guitar possibly drum overheads, piano cajon etc.
Also could be used on singer guitarist ...
The km86 seems like a good contender but i'm a little worriied about the noise floor as a lot of what i do is at quite a low level.
Any other contenders or would the KM86 work out fine?

Many thanks

The Shure Beta 181 sounds really nice and is quiet. I'm sure it a completely different mic than the Neumann.

For an SDC fig.8, I would look at:-

Sennheiser MKH 30
Neumann KM 120-A (-D)
Neumann KM 120
(old KM100 series)
Shcoeps CCM 8
MBHO MBC KA 800 A
with MPB 860
Ambient ATE 208 EMESSER

All these are pure fig.8 microphones with a single diaphragm and not a fig.8 made up from back-to-back cardioid mics.

Any multi-pattern SDC is likely to be relatively noisy, esp in fig-8 and omni modes where both capsules are contributing their noise.

You could consider something like the Pearl TL-44. It's technically a large diaphragm mic, but the rectangular capsule has some of the sonic qualities of an SDC.

The KM86 is an old, discontinued mic.

The Gefell UMT 70S is a new mic., has the Georg Neumann M7 capsule and sells for around Β£1,200 +VAT in the UK.

Worth considering...

Motown, RCA and Abbey Road too! They weren't as popular as 87s in indi studios. I assume this was because they were just as expensive but didn't look as impressive.

Hi Bob

Would it be possible to give me an idea of sound compared to a 70s u87 (which I have ) for example .I am thinking that if I had both they could be used to cover a lot of bases and together in micing singer /guitarists in fig 8
Thanks

The 84 and 86 have the most uniform pattern of any mike I've ever used. This makes placement far less critical and allows use at greater distances without becoming muddy. The low-end is more extended than an 87 requiring use of a shock mount. The one for the Shure SM81 is inexpensive and works perfectly.

i was interested to learn that km86's were used exclusively for a while at Motown.
But can you say exactly why that was the case?
Was it a budget thing or was it for continuity between different producers or just that the km86 can do it all ...

Km 86s were among the most expensive mikes available at the time. They simply work very well on almost anything.
