Realios A9031 mic amps

Anyone else try these?
very few people seem to have used these around here.
I've been using 4 for drums,Glyn Johns style.
haven't a/b'd to 3 band 69's yet and haven't heard Henry Hirsch's console.
they have a TON of gain.maybe too much.like an sm57 and royer on cranked amp had to be padded on gain setting 1.
sound close to the old type 79 4 banders but a bit more transparent open.
nice.

Ive heard the same comment about Tonys.

Would be really interested to hear these and Tony's reissue, side by side.

yeah I had some about 6 years ago.unfortunately the VK rack was wired wrong so the modules sounded weird.
love to A/B at some point.
strange it seems like only a few people have used the Realios.

I bought them from a producer friend with good ears who had both modules and preferred these.sold these because he got a real Helios console recently.
just curious to see if anyone else on the planet actually owns these aside from GS member tubehead.

Yeah I gotta say these guys make great stuff but maybe marketing isn't their strong suit.
That said, they (Realios products)were at NAMM the past couple years.

I just sold off two original modules a couple months ago.
Miss them.

Two original 312's from the Heider board? Very cool...

I still really love the Helios stuff...I'll end up getting another soon enough (maybe). Just wasn't using the EQ enough to justify it after hearing the CAPI stuff. Comparing it to the regular CAPI 312, it wasn't as smooth in the mids and had a smaller bottom. The mids were pretty apparent. The 312 through the 528 with some filter love...good lord, awesome. Jeff had to take the Heider 312 proto back with him - I begged him to let me have it - but it was even thicker with even more mid info than the regular 312.

As far as Realios, I was really impressed with the 660...Nothing wrong with that thing at all (excluding not having make-up gain)...I would imagine the 9031 probably sounds fantastic. Seems like Billy Ward (drummer) mentioned he had two and loved them. I think he liked them better than the Helios re-issues...

BTW - happy bday!

Thanks brotha!
It looks like the Capi Heiders are dual stage.
The orinals aren't ..although there was tons of other stuff happening with the modules in the original frame that made them especially round/ gooey sounding..transformers galore.
I want Daul stage Heider's.

i happen to have heard the realios 9031 and the helios reissues modules side by side.
after comparing both i kept the 2 realios modules...
and bought 8 helios pre/eqs.

before i decided on that investment i basically spent three days of testing.
actually both units are not too far apart soundwise.
in a nutshell to me the realios pre is a little more shimmery in the upper range and the helios sounds more realistic.
depending on the application this could be a good or not so good thing.
i couldnΒ΄t have imagined buying 8 realios modules though and am very happy with my 8 helios units now.
but they are so close in character and sound quality it is really a matter of taste and definately nothing that divides a good recording from a bad recording.
greetz to the slutz, johannes

HAH! You're too funny. P.S. Dave Amels really did nail it. I can't wait for the EQ section.

Is anyone using the EQ's?
I think they've been out for at least a year right?

I owned 16 at one point! How's that for trying them out!

I loved them. The only reason I sold them, was I bought a WSW console and couldn't justify keeping them. I really thought they were great and used to love overdriving them to get a great direct Zeppelin guitar overdrive sound.

I originally purchased them bc I've done a lot of work with Henry Hirsch and trust his ears and Dave Amels skills as a designer. I also own an Anamod 670.

The only thing I would say is that I don't prefer to use 500 series modules in general bc of the lack of great power supplies.

I REALLY wish these had an output variable fader/pot on them for overdriving the signals pre fader. instead of having to attenuate w/ pad, comp etc.

ok i see two versions. one from some guy name Arny or Arnold which is Helios 69 on here and another one called Relios which i think is preamp only.

how do these compare the original? is the one by Arnold exact sample replica? since they own the company? or they both clones

I have a rack of 3 band passive Lustraphone originals.[just sold one pair to an Aussie gearslut].
like out of Island Basing/ the Rolling Stone mobile etc.
Had 4 Arny's and 4 Amels.
neither sound like these old ones.
Amels:they were good mic pre's.not mindblowing "wow" but very good.
had a lot of gain but a lot cleaner than the Lustraphones.
more vanilla.borderline boring to my ears.
the second I got the vintage units they were sold right off.
Anry's sounded kinda spongey and soft by comparison...the rack they came i was jacked/wired wrong.I got some 500 series units a while later.headroom issues aside, did NOT like them.
all my other stuff, vintage Neves,Capi's etc blew them away.
After a LOT of use side by side with old Neve,API Telefunken Capi etc the old Helios have a more round vintage yet slightly mid forward tone.
yes they're vibey, but straight up,aren't as high fidelity as Neves or API's.
The EQ is very cool for mid and 10k boosts.
the eq with the pre is only part of the sound you hear from the old records of that era.
there's also other line stages,busses,vintage tape machines[Ampex M56 et],mic's and musicians,insanely great songs,arrangements etc involved.
they're very cool but definitely not the be all end all in mic amps.
These guys who are marketing this stuff[competing with a million other 500 series "new thing since sliced bread" units] desperately want to to think your going to get the Led Zep,Stones,Who vibe if you buy these.sorry but its absolute marketing bull****.
You will most definitely not.
seriously after pretty much trying everything in the last 15 years,I wouldn't bother with any reissue Helios stuff.
they're are so many other good sounding options out there. The Capi stuff is amazing sounding and extremely affordable.
if your interested in the old sound try to rent or borrow some old ones .
are they worth 8-9 grand a pair?
Personally After 35 years of recording I don't think any mic pre is worth that.
just my opinion.
it is subjective.

I bought a pair of the Realios 500 preamps from Roundbadge, and while I didn't compare to the vintage units, I did find that they made cheap, inexpensive acoustic guitars sound great. It was pretty amazing transformation to hear. Unfortunately, it also had the reverse effect: it made very expensive guitars sound pretty bad, so I sold them right away. But if you have people coming in to your studio with low budget guitars, these would be the first things I would go for, as it gave them a lot body and power.
