I almost always use the OCL/2 for compressing acoustic guitars as I'm usually looking for something transparent. It works on so much more to boot! The last project I worked on, I had the OCL/2 strapped across the buss, so I turned to the Portico 4053 for a particularly dynamic, flat picked Gibson and it was pretty amazing. If I'm looking for something that yells compressor, I usually hit the Mohog hard.

The Buzz SOC is always a good choice.

So it the Safe Sound Dynamics Toolbox (I have two so I am selling one).

For superclean and inexpensive - the Aphex 651 modded by Jim Williams.

My pleasure, Scott!

Let me know if the files work on your system, I can send other formats if not.

the OCL/2 was my go to comp for a very long time and would almost always slightly compress acoustic instruments ( not just guitars ) to get more control over transients. these days my go to compressor is the sebatron SMAC compressor.it's the same type of optical as the OCL/2 but to me appears to be even more transparent and gives me a bit more control over the faster dynamic stuff.

Neve 33609 folks - anyone have any thoughts as to how a pair of the BAE 10DC comps would compare in this regard (stereo-recorded acoustic instrumental guitar)?

A very big A Designs Nail fan. I think they are works of art.
If you move to the 500 format there some others I also like: ) .

Another vote for the Manley Vari-Mu here - can be very subtle but gorgeous sounding...

You will just need to rent the gear you want to try out .

Most of those choices you have are good ones . But only you know what you want out of that sound .

The Pendulum units are very nice as well as the Crane Song units .
I prefer clean , sweet , not sterile ,
Sounds for acoustic and those units do that .
Some people like compressors with more color and fat to the mix so you want API or something else .

But bottom line , you have to just use some gear to find what you like .

I am looking for a good compressor for acoustic guitar.
Heard the ocl-2 and thought it was gorgeous.
Anyone uses retro 176 on acoustic guitar?

I bought a few based off of this thread for acoustic guitar - the OCL2 and the Buzz SOC. I like them both and I don't know that I could tell the difference between them on acoustic guitar in a blind test. After all, you don't really "drive" them - you just use them for the character or "oomph". They are similar. I hate it but I'm about to list my OCL2 - can't afford both!

I've thought the same for ten years. Tubes don't always equal obvious color. The SOC20 which is the class A transformer coupled brother of the SOC 1.1 is more colored than the ocl 2.

Buzz SOS is a real winner....I bought mine off Nathan many years ago and of all the gear that has come and gone its still in the rack and used on every session. So easy to dial in....love it

Give a look at the A Designs Nail. That's what I use, and I gotta say it's very very musical. There's a lot of versatility in that unit with the warmth you're looking for.

The Manley ELOP is really great for this application. It's LED based optical system is fatser than a T-4 (normal light buld) based optical unit like an LA-2A and that added clarity is nice for fingerstyle guitar. Yet, being optical it's still smooth and the nice tube make up gain amp in the ELOP gives it a very pleasant sound. Great overall tracking compressor, shines on many things but excels on fingerstyle acoustic. I use it with a pair of Neumann KM74 mics or a Schoeps M221B that I have.
