unlikely, i know... but one can dream...
We did a blind side by side w the pultecs, amtecs and tube techs
On one of those bitchin manley Backbone mastering switching boxes.
Amtecs had good solid low end
Pulse had better smoother highs and a bloom in the low end the others did not.
The tube techs were ok .low end was not as big and focused compared to the pultecs. The highs were ok but Agian at higher boosts not as smooth.
the guy who brought the pair for the comparison got kinda bummed and put them up for sale a week later
Pultecs won the shootout
Amtecs overall sounded very good though

CLA would just have audio passing the pultecs for the clunky old big transformers and not the actually equalising. That'd fudge up the mix anyways if he did obviously...

I've used many Pultecs over the years and have a love affair with both their high and low end. A couple of years ago, a mix room where I work a lot put a couple of Cartec EQP1a's in the rack and I immediately tried them over all the usual places I would put Pultecs.

More often than not I found myself taking them off. For me, they don't have any of the mojo of Pultecs. They are good equalisers for sure but they don't make me smile and go "oh yeah, baby" the way pultecs do.

that usually results from people nowadays being rather removers and not adders. As they're reaching the completion of a mix, they realise that either bottom or top end lacks which consecutively is being repatriated all at once.

Of course, this was just a bad example of a phenomena that's been occurring all across the world of music production. There are plenty engineers out there that make a subtle use of pultecs or anything alike.

who would that be then?

we must live on different planets .
I see guys like Joe Barresi/CLA etc have the comp/eq chain inline from the get go.
imo sounds better too.

I wasn't referring to the big names. Also inline comp / eq chains from the get go does not make them reiterate the same method with every mix all over again.

I was just saying people have gotten so accustomed to cutting wherever it is possible instead of embracing the source and trying to build up on what had been delivered.

I've just drawn a deduction from all the countless threads on GS where people obviously yearn for a pair of pultecs to abuse their mixbus. Smart artists, I presume such as you, pull the trigger if both ends strike them dull or flat on top of an already decisive mix structure.

I hope you can see now where I'm coming from.

Love the Mercury units.
I own an original ep 1 and
After side by side comparisons they are diff tad different but both give me the same warm and fuzzy feeling

youre wrong again and again. CLA has his rare piece of 70Hz pultecs matched pair mastering edition. MASERATI has his pair of V76.

its part of the gig to give mixes your special imprint tone-wise and do leave it at that setting. you want people to recognize your sound. top mixing engineers are not lazy and dial in a setting after the mix, they leave it at that setting all the time....
