Gefell UMT70S vs. UM70S

Hello,

Has anyone compared these two side by side? I realize that the "T" version is transformerless, and the specs are slightly different (lower self-noise), but I'm referring to the sound of the two. I did a search, but didn't locate anything vis a vis a head-to-head comparison of the two.

Thanks in advance.

UMT70s is more detailed/clean/"fast" excellent as an all arounder...

um70 is sweeter/more hair/less detailed....IMHO, more of a niche mic.. of course, If it has that MG tag, you know it is something special.

Thanks, T Ray.

That was what I might have guessed; I'm more interested in clean/pure/no character. The M930 is my favorite mic (acoustic, chamber instruments, etc). And am looking for another similar mic, yet slightly different. Plus, with the multi patten of the UMT70S, that in Fig. 8 ,along with the M930, could be the M/S from heaven.

Kind regards,

well...in that case, grab the UMT800 OR the umt70s. they meet all of those standards.

T.Ray (and/or anyone else that might know):

How would you compare or contrast the UMT70S with the M930?

TIA,

To me:

the Um70s is a fuller, nicer sounding mic than its transformerless sibling the UMT70

similar in character, but blander somehow in the newer version.

EITHER is a much better, bigger, less boxy sounding mic than the 930

the 70s is definiately a cleaner mic than the 930, but not by far. umt70s has perhaps a greater high extension. I use them both, and consider them both very valuable.. m930 gets more vocals and percussion, umt70s is better on piano, strings, etc..but either would do as an all rounder. one being "better" is not accurate. They are different.

Hi T.Ray and William,

That's very helpful info from you both; thanks so much. I don't think of mics as one being "better" than another; just different, subject to taste, how they sound in that room on that day, etc.

Thanks again and best regards,

I think of the UM70 as being much better.

given both in the room, i would simply NEVER pick the 930 to use over the UM70.

this is of course a matter of taste.
But it's still true, for ME.

I'm bringing this thread up again, because I have the opportunity to get an okay deal on either a newer UMT71s (transformerless, card only) and a UM70s (early Microtech Gefell, fixed body/capsule, variable pattern). The latter is slightly more expensive, but that shouldn't be an issue.
From what I can read from this thread, the transformerless version is more detailed, yet less colored. But are the differeces major or subtle?
I'm going to use mine primarily for male vox (voice somewhere in between John Mayer and Gavin deGraw), acoustic guitar (Martin D-28 Marquis) and electric guitar cabs. My preamp choices are API's and RMS Tubule.
Wich would you prefer? And do you use the omni and figure-8 patterns a lot?

Anyone use the UM70 on OH? I was thinking of getting a couple Josephson C42's but the UM70 seems more versatile....

Agreed. You can hear them here:

Actually, I used the M71S (Cardiod only version of the UM70) on OH's and it is my FAVORITE, FAVORITE, FAVORITE OH mic. Very well balanced, detailed and agressive.

On a side note, the UM70 in Fig8 on outside kick is phenomenal. Killer. Very 47FET-ish. They both have that M7 cap.

Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with the UM70. If you need ultra clarity, and a more clinical sound, the T version would be your choice.

Thanks for the replys, guys - it seems I can't go wrong with the um70s. And for my taste, I usually go for a little color... Actually, the seller lets me compare it to one of his 87s; I'm looking forward to that...!
