Buying a compressor for tracking vocals and bass.

Hello folks, my case as follows:

I'm putting my attention on buying a LA2a.

* I’m buying this compressor for tracking only vocals and bass. I mix inbox, so I
compress only going in.
* I want to keep it simple and trustworthy, that’s why an LA2a type of compressor
would be perfect .
* I’ve been tracking with Fatso, would an LA2a be a steep up?
* I never used an LA3a, would it be nice for this?

i own both of them. the la-2a is definitely the better tool for vocals. at least for my personal taste.

Perhaps he's waiting for someone talking him into a DISTRESSOR or an 1176...

...nah, if you got the cash go for LA2!!

it really depends on what kind of vocals we are talking about.
for aggressive (rock) vocals i'd prefer the 1176, too.
but for smooth, soulful vocals the la-2a is the way to go. ymmv, of course.

Tubetech CL1B.

I have an LA2a and usually only reach for it first on acoustic and electrics. Vocals and bass the CL1B.

A true slut...

...would go for both... 1176 into the LA2A for vocals.

-a

P.S. There's no end in sight in this game, until you stand up one day and say, "Hello, my name is (fill in blank) and I'm a Gearslut."

or...use what you have, buy when you need (not can). And in the interest of full disclosure, I'm a total hipocrite here!

Actually, I promised myself not to make any mayor inversion without consulting it with my Gearslutz colleagues. I’ve made my best decisions that way.
You’re kind of right: as anyone I’ve been thinking in LA2a, LA3a, Distressor or 1176LN. I think my Fatso covers the 1176LN pretty well, at least for tracking. So my main decision could be LA3a or LA2a. I have no experience with the LA3a. Now it comes the CL1B.
The kind of music I work mostly is modern rock and pop ballads.

For Vocals, I prefer LA3a.

The LA2a works sometimes too, but IMHO LA3a works almost all the time.

P.S. I haven't tried the re-issue.

I haven´t tried the new LA2a but the vintage ones are great. The TubeTech is also great with more options of attack, release, etc but if you are tracking yourself singing or playing maybe the LA2a it´s easier. Both of them are great but I prefer the CL1-B for bass and the LA2a for vocal but the TubeTech sounds work great in both applications.

I love both. I haven´t worked with a LA3a so I can´t say anything about that one.

Good call on the Neumann. I just picked up a U473 last week and it's everything it was said to be on vocals.

There is a lot of people that try too hard in one bite. Gentle smooth totaly non knocky. Thats the way. Also is Pultec a rude word today, hardly a mention for the old Varimu type.

You see? This exercise is very necesary for me. I almost buy an LA2a, now my mind is made (almost fixed) for the LA3a.

Yeah, yeah, I know...of course I'm a gearslut wanting to have both, and a Distressor too. But I'm getting my Pearlman TM-1 today from UPS (yeah!!!) and I just got a Demeter VTMP-2b last month and a KM84 the month before.
So, one steep at the time.

Thank you guys, like always!

I like the LA2a for vox and bass. I haven't heard the LA3a.
