Transparent Microphone?

Transparent is a word that gets batted around fairly often with
regard to mic pres: Millennia, GML, Hardy etc. But what about
a MICROPHONE that imparts little or no color or characteristic
and has a flat frequency response.

I would think that on great sounding vintage
string instruments and pianos that transparent would be
in order... perhaps too for foley and field recording.

I've seen the Brauner VM1 described as a 'transparent' microphone...

Any others?

Thoughts on applications?

Sure... Josephson C617s with Gefell MK221 capsules are the most transparent microphone pair I have ever heard, more than any DPA, Sonodore, Schoeps, et al..

I guess this is due to the fact that those capsules are measurement capsules.

also, the Gefell MK 250 with MV220 bodies...absolutely transparent.

I use my MV 220s/Mk250s/mk221s in my job, location classical work. they excel at that task...on any instrument.

I can suggest from what I use daily:

DPA 4041S - very transparent and neutral, almost sharp on some applications
Bruel&Kjaer - transparent
Small diaphragm Schoeps and Gefells - mostly very neutral and clean
Brauner VM1 KHE - high resolution, clean, neutral, exceptionally transparent and pleasant - the best for vocals, piano, rooms and everything that sounds good by itself

Korby FET - very clear and detailed and musical
Schoeps CMC6/MK4 - the same only a bit smaller sounding

Other mics like B&K (DPA), AKG 414, etc. are neutral but not so musical

Add to the good lists above: Earthworks?

Not always flattering, but certainly "accurate."
