Hey Dude,

My Royer R122 > Portico 5012 will...

blow your Germanium/57 + LTD/121 away!

Try for yourself Mr. Evil

As far as the MP3's here the order of good to bad is obvious even when hearing within a mix.

Like I said before, I also did a preamp comparison a few weeks ago.
It's almost the same setup Les paul, Rectifier, Recto Cab, SM57

I compared my API preamps to the ADT Toolkit preamp.
I just wanted to post these files, because I still hardly believe that the differences in tone are that huge between the preamps. Of course you also clearly hear a difference in my files, but not as huge!

Here they are:

Have fun!

Sure--I really dislike the sound of the Germs on acoustic guitar. It gets really mushy.

I find the Germs are good for "thick" or "smooth" but I'll reach for something else if I want present and punchy (TG-2 for instance). To my ears, the Germs round off or saturate transients in a way that doesn't flatter some applications (clean, bright electric guitar for example).

That said, I just did a horn session today and used the Germs with Gefell UM70 (sax, trumpet)--really nice. I find that I can use condenser mics on horns with the Germs, and for some contexts, it works better than ribbons (especially for woodwinds or flutes). The Germs lend a velvety top end to condensers, which is what I like about ribbons on horns, but have more detail, which is what I like about condensers--best of both worlds.
