Vocals with a KM54

Today we did a session recording vocals through a KM54 microphone that we usually only use for acoustic instruments like piano or fiddle. Sounded great on vocals. Producer said "you can't do that it's a small diaphragm microphone, blah blah." I know KM56's were used a lot for vocals in the past. Could the KM54 be used in the same fashion? I mean if it sounds good who cares? Any negative reasons not to?

I've never had any really good SDCs, but there are definitely those who see fit to use them on vocals...
