bs, the U87ai is a very good and versatile mic, if the budget is allowing only one
good allround mic iΒ΄d always and forever choose a U87ai - yes a brand new one !

And who compared a U67 to a U87ai ? I did not, never used a 67, still the Ai remains
a very good allround mic - whoever says whatever.

ELA-M 251 and Manley Gold Reference are going to get my vote. I haven't had a single situation where either one, nor the other, didn't work magic.

Runners up would be U47 with the right singer, U67 can sound very nice too if it's in good shape, and an old U87 is an awesome all-rounder.

I have had the opportunity to hear a group of M49's at the Glen Gould Studio at CBC Canada, but it was in a Deca Tree configuration and in front of a 30 piece orchestra. It literally brought tears to my eyes. But I've never used it on a vocal, so I can't comment.

Would you guys consider a CM7 an all around type of mic?

For something you can put on literally anything, the Soundelux/Bock u195, has fat/norm switch, very smooth top end...great all around mic.

I'm selling a pair of VM-1's and a pair of Valvets but I'm keeping my 3 PhantomV's. The Vavets seem to render vocals better than th VM-1's though but the Phantoms are great mics, clean and true

+1 on the Valvet-

For those who like the Manley Ref Cardiod, here's another, less strident option...

For a "reasonable" amount of cash my money would be on the Blue Bottle with the stock B6 capsule. Haven't heard it sound anything other than really good on anyone, and on many it is just awesome.

My vote (for mics currently made)

Neumann u87ai
Bock 251c
Brauner VMA

They are all quite different, but I feel they are all flexible and each one can work on a lot of different voices.

I agree with jjblair; the M49 is the most allround mic.

I have specialised in vocal recordings [next to mixing and mastering] and I have a
C-12, U-47, M-251 and M-49 [all in original pristine condition] ready to record. So we always test the singer's voice on these 4 mics and the M-49 is always good but almost never the best vocal mic.

This is completely subjective. I have a vintage U47, a vintage U87 and a U87ai - and guess what sounds best for my needs? That's right, the U87ai. I hate when people badmouth perfectly good products.

good for you!! I've been in at least 10 studios where the 87 ai stay in the locker while the U87 get used everyday. I don't know 1 engineer around me who likes the 87ai better then a "GOOD" vintage one. we must all be "badmouthing" then?
if it works for you great!! and since it's the best for your needs why don't you sell me ur "less useful" U47 and U87 heh

251 or C-12 is a toss-up on me.

Quick question for jjblair...
In another thread you mentioned A/Bing "just vocals" for mic comparison isn't reliable.

"Grasshopper" here asks why?

Thanks,
Chris

I don't like the U47 as an all around... It really does feel harsh when you get all into it with some power vocals... It's a great mic... but it has it's place.... in terms of versatility I think the u67 beats it and the C12
