depending on the snare and drummer sometimes use nothing..if it needs help i use a mult....have used up to 4 channels...one straight with some eq. another with a dbx 160L backed with a analog channel plug set to underbias 2. another channel with lowpass eq and one with highpass eq .each sent to different verbs....i have also used some filtered white noise notched around 7k and gated and triggered sent to a reverb if i want to ad some sparkle to the snares.....naturally i use less if the drummer is a good studio player and has well tuned drums.

I use a RNC during tracking, comes mixing time I put the whole drumsubmix through a Boss compressor/sustainer guitar pedal with compression and sustain on eleven and mix it in with the unprocessed drums.
Then I try to make the snare stick out of the mix like 3-5 dB comes mastering time the snare kinda ducks the whole mix, have to smash it though.

I usually go class A mic preamp to DBX 160 to tape or protools. Then out of protools I'll do a mult and send the kick and snare to my home made ssl buss compressor, where I use the ssl sound for about 80% of the sound. Works nicely.

I've got an old Symetrix 501 - yeah I know - that I use heap in parallel on snares.
I've often thought about upgrading the op amps in it, but I'm scared it will sound better.
It's one of those units I'd hide if I was taking a pictue of my rack, but I can't stop using it. I need help. The other one I like is the Federal, but I'm often using that on bass already.

UA reissue 1176, Distressor, Neve 2254e or Symetrix 501 are the usual candidates. Does the SPL TD count?

Four pretty different compressors that I like on snare for different reasons/uses, in no particular order, and words I'd use to describe them include:

SSL 4000G = punchy
dbx 160XT or 903 = snappy
1176 (Silver) = from smooth to aggressive

Usually I'll use one of these, as well as a mix of the Kick/Snr/Toms through either a Tube-Tech or SSL Quad for a bit of extra pump if I need it. Occasionally I'll mix in the "dry", but the bottom mic is always uncompressed and on a good snare can often be mixed pretty "in there" to allow some breathing and dynamics in the timbre.

and I mult pre compression slam a Purple MC77.... In a unpleasant distorted way. Nice to tuck it in under the massive crack that the Squeezebox is riding

I rarely need much beyond my subgroup compression. The last few times I used a compressor on the snare I used and ES-8. I also like the Transient Designer.

Nothing else works like a Distressor on rock snare IMO. Purple MC77 would be my second choice. SSL quad style comp third. I don't need no stinking mult, smash it (within reason).

Finally someone else who doesn't mult. Distressor on the way in, Daking comp during the mix. That's it.

My choice would be Distressor or SSL dyn channel comp on the snare return and MC77 on a mult(with some SSL channel expansion thrown in to taste).

All in mix.

When tracking nothing.

I usually use a Transient Designer on the real channel, and a mult or two if necessary for thickness or attack or whatever, with a 32264, Distressor, 160vu... If there's a snare bottom I love a distressor in nuke with appropriate attack and release to make a nice psshht sound... I'll also have an aux send to an 1176 with 4 and 20 pushed in, and another aux to a distressor, Fairchild or custom Dave Collins Opto smash box, depending on the vibe of the song. The aux busses also get varying amounts of kick and overheads when needed... all good fun

1176 all the way for smashing mults. I usually don't compress snare on the way in. You can really kill the sound that way if you're not careful, not to mention you run the risk of making the hat too loud in the snare mic, depending on how you're micing it.

since everyone said all the normal stuff i'll throw out 2 oddballs:

ADL 1500 compressor... not really compressing (needle wasnt moving) but for crunch... dont remember if i used 1 channel or both in series but it worked very well... very machine-like, especially followed thru a distressor.

Summit TLA 100... long attack.. knock a couple dB off.. tried this on a whim and it sounded better than i expected... cool for that laid back "Nashville" sound.. something i'd do on a laid back Cheryl Crow type song.

Compressing the snare allways got me a bit moore hi-hat bleed, wich I never liked.

So after getting the Sony Oxford Transmod I use that instead to give moore attack as it doesen't increase the hihat bleed. Only compressor I use on the drums is the Samplitude AM Track in paralellmode only a few db's just to pack it together...Sounds natural and punchy...

John Musgrave modified Neve V compressor. Distressors are also great on drums.
I've used 160 vu's also nice for bringing out attack

Snare? Easy. SSL channel comp. It's the one thing that the SSL channel comp is actually my first choice for. For other things it can be a workhorse and get the job done, but for snare, if I'm not in an SSL mix room, I'd like to have an outboard SSL channel comp with me.

2-3 samples or just the same 1 sample on 2-3 midi tracks-
individually tuned with pitch, filters, ADSR envelope.
Compressed ... or not.
(same goes for KIK)
