For a whopping 6 months! I was doing marketing, but also was drafted into drum production much of the time. Was building a studio in the factory, but ultimately realized I'd rather be in Seattle than the wilds of western Mass., and would have likely lost the love of my life had I stayed there.

It was really cool that Revival Drum Shop let me rent that snare for the weekend. It's simply incredible! It also sucks because I really want to buy it now, and let's just say the price tag is crazy. But I'm a GS so I'm thinking hard of pulling the trigger. I own 13 really nice snare drums and every freaking time I went to swap the N&C out with another one that I thought would suit the song/feel/tempo/vibe better, after 2 bars of the drummer playing I'd be running back into the live room to swap it back in. It stayed on the kit the whole session - 8/8 songs. It literally made the drummer sound better. It needed next to no EQ on the close mics, which is so rare in my world. And it's like 30% louder than any other snare, which means less hat bleed in the snare mic, great snare tone in the room mics and you can hear all the ghost notes really well. But I digress... Here's the tracking sheet from the session:

That snare does have a tremendous 'crack' to it!

Though at the nearly 3K (GBP) price i'm seeing for it on reverb, it would damn well have to be crazy special!!!! Holy moly!

these are all great reasons to buy it imho. also in case you want to resell it, you get all your money back..

I sometimes use a sennheiser e901 (which is the sennheiser version of the sm91), that I like for kick in duties.. I feel it blends better for some reasons.. the shure sm91 is "brighter" or more "spiky"..

I'm disappointed, you didn't use any MA5.. ahahaha

I’ve never tried the 901 but I’d love to. I went for the SM91 over the Beta91A after doing some research and it seems that most folks preferred the former. I’ve yet to meet a Shure Beta mic that I liked the sound of.

Beside that kit I was tracking bass, two guitarists and one singer at the same time. I was running a Sony C37A that was on gtr cab into one of them and the vocal mic into the other. I really should get 2 more. Or 6!

I’ve used a lot of beta91 through the years (almost exclusively live).. totally usable for the 2mic in/out thing but I agree with you..
That’s why I landed on the e901..wonder what you think about that..

Well I pulled the trigger! I traded in a couple of my least used snares to slightly offset the cost. The drum is serial number 19, manufactured in 2003.

Great! I believe you did a great thing..

It will serve you well, and it can only get up in price, or in the worst case scenario stay at that price, but you’ll be able to use it in the meanwhile and don’t lose any money if you decide to sell it at some point.
Also it will be easy to trade in case of necessity too..

Not really mic‘d up, but I wanted to brag about our latest arrival with some drum porn of my own, it‘s been too long...
A ca. 1980 Tama Mastercraft Imperialstar snare.
14“x6.5“ seamless steel shell, die-cast hoops, OneTouch Tone Control internal damper, RB Roller Bed strainer.
Great tuning range, always with a beefy fundamental.
Also, I finally took the time to cut up some pancakes to standard drum diameters from 13“ to 16“, in case a client wants to ringofy their kit. (Can‘t believe there are actually companies marketting these things...)

Maybe I can probe the GS drum-hivemind with a question: is any of the major manufacturers currently offering a 13x8 or even 13x7 rack tom?
13x9 seems to be the standard, but I want shallow.
Trying to stay away from prohibitively priced vintage or custom shop products.

Try a Sonor Vintage series.
They make a really nice thin beech shell with rounded bearing edges in a 13x8. Beech is kind of like a good mix of Maple and birch.

I had an original Sonor vintage series from 1968. I kind of bought it on a whim. But man, it sounded so good and just had a sound that was really special. For some dumb reason I sold that and my Ayotte and got a new Sonor Vintage reissue, which was a lovely kit, didn't quite sound like the 1968 version, but still excellent. The 1968 had thicker shells and was a little more tight sounding, like thicker shells would make it. But the reissue had this beautiful pillowy feel to it, you didn't have to lay in to open it up, very musical and the tones are clear and focused.
Anyway, I sold it to renovate my house during covid because I couldn't do anything else and we were selling.
Fair to say the sale did ok and I've ordered a Noble and Cooley heritage series 6 piece for my little studio and to play live.
