That's part of the fun of this job and threads like this. The "wow that's cool, I never thought of THAT" factor.

Demo sesh playing with the new H2 Helios pre/eq’s.
This is an AEA 88 into the H2’s into a Chandler Zener.
No other processing on buss.
Good super simple fun!
(Ludwig classic maple + black beauty)

This is super cool, I feel the Zener is doing most of the work. Are the Helios driven hard?

I cranked he H2’s hard & the eq is very powerful! I tried to go easy but subtle is not my strong suit. 🙄😬
Zener: I had the side-chain open to 300hz so only squishing above that.

Has been building a new live studio and is still not finished. But have tested the room with slightly different microphones, to make the final corrections with the construction and acoustics. Has recently set up a youtube channel for friends and those who are curious to listen and see. Here is the video of that recording:

Here is a beautiful Ludwig kit from the 60's. My snare is a 12 "DW. I used two crashes 16" Byzance dry for HiHat. Changed to Remo Fiberskyn which made a completely different tone on the bd. No pillows and blankets in the bd so it sings happily

Microphones:
Coles 4038 - Capi VP26 - Behind the drums
Stam U87 Mono OH - Vintage Design CA81
AKG C451- Neve 33115 - Stereo OH
BD Amb - GA U47 - Capi VP26
BD In - AKG 52 - Capi VP26
Subkick (home made) - UA
Vanguard V44S - Capi VP26 - Stereo Room
Ribbon Mono Room (unmarked)
That said, most standard.

Fantastic setup! How do you like the RCA 77 on drums? What's your favourite positions and pattern settings?

That’s the flavor mic. It’s in cardioid, EQ’d radically, and compressed hard. I want it to sound crunchy.

I recently got to record my 1967 Vox kit for a cool production that called for wide-open drum tones. It's a Vox-branded Trixon kit that was made in West Germany with 6-ply beech shells. I have Remo classic fit ambassadors on the toms and a coated ambassador over a Fiberskyn II on the kick, plus my 14x6.5 Ludwig Super Brass snare. Cymbals are 15" Istanbul Agop 30th Anniversary hihats, 22" Istanbul Agop Traditional Jazz Ride and 26" Cymbal & Gong Holy Grail Ride.

Kick - AKG D12 - Vintech x73i
SnTop - Unidyne III - Avedis MA5 - Heritage 1073/500 (line in for EQ)
SnBot - Unidyne III - Neve 33115
Hats - KM84 - Neve 33115
Toms - Sennheiser MD421's - SSL4000 channels
Overheads - Josephson e22S - Langevin AM16
Room - Coles 4038's - CraneSong Flamingo
Crotch - Blue Bottle with Neumann M8 cap - Vintech x73i - Urei 1176

LOVE the way the drums sound - esp. the kick. Good move going sans blankets; I think that would have been an injustice.

When I heard the drums alone, thought it sounded like crap.

Then when you hear them in context it works so well. A stellar example of production.

My latest drum recording session @ Studio G7 in Berlin-Buch:

Drums were Sonor Hilite 20" kick, Sonor Delite toms (10"/12"/16") and a very nice 15x5" Pearl Mahogany snare.
Cymbals we used: Paiste Twenty 15" HH and splash, Mellow 16" and 18" crashes and a Traditional 22" ride.

OH R -> Ehrlund EHR M -> Martech MSS10
OH L -> Ehrlund EHR M -> Martech MSS10
Kick In -> Sennheiser E902 -> SH Mono Gamma
Kick Out -> CAD E350 -> BAE 1023
Tom 1 -> MBHO MBD 219sc -> UA 2108
Tom 2 -> MBHO MBD 219sc -> UA 2108
Tom 3 -> Sennheiser 421 -> Grace 101
Snare -> AT ATM650 -> SH Mono Gamma
Mono Room (Lounge) -> Sony C37P -> Grace 101

AD was Lucid 88192 clocked by Mutec MC3+.

No processing, just faders up and a bit of panning.

Nice Tom mics!

Love the C37. The mic on the floor tom seems to be a C38. How do they compare, are they close?
