hey jon, what do you use to keep the kick from moving on those nice floors? i have to pound in concrete nails on a 2x4 into the concrete floor to keep some guys kits from moving. either that or a carpet with the drum set on top of it, also with a 2x4 screwed into the carpet [the weight of the drummer keeps it all in place, or a non skid pad]

although i wont be able to do that in a few weeks after the hardwood floor goes in.
AJ,

The kit on the carpet alone didn't hold the kick in place. What we ended up doing was tying a loop of heavy cable around the drum throne and the kick drum...so the drummer's own weight held the kick in place while he was playing. It worked. If you want a photo of this to see it clearly, let me know.

P.S. re Jules' last post......he knows what he's talking about.

Where do you guys like to place your room mics?

Omni or cardiod?

Favorite is a large diaphram cardiod pointing away from the kit - 7 foot up, pointing at and 6 inches from, a wall made from concrete, stone or brick.

This delivers a cymbal & snare 'presence ambience" I like.

I am told this is because I must like the sound of 'the boundary effect" (what is that anyway?)

That's kind of ghetto, dude. I saw a speed metal drummer do this once with a bungee cord. He was from a real bad part of town...heh

ah yes, the rope method. that has been done here before until i brought out my hammer and concrete nails. im kinda amazed that the drum manufacturers dont come up with a better way of keeping them in place.

I sometimes put a little piece of gaffa ( ??? - sorry for the english ) tape on the HH to lower the sonic difference between an open and a closed HiHat. Sometimes, especially when you`re going for a trashy Hihat sound that doesn`t really need the top end, it really works great.
Maybe you wanna try this for the trashy HH chorus song.

i also love the Oktava mic as a room mic - very underrated mics I think. One of my favourite room mic is the Beyer M160 ribbon mic
