It just doesn't sound as good. It's smaller where the 2A makes things a bit bigger sounding. The 2B doesn't suck as much as some other things out there (9098CL comes to mind), but when you have a chance to compare a recently tuned LCA-2b to a recently tuned LCA-2a there's no comparison. The overall tone is better, the limiter section is actually useful for some things, the low end is way better, the midrange is less smeary etc. Also, the 2A runs way hotter. Most people take the top cover off and leave an open space up there.

Ya want all the secrets right???

The LCA-2a needs to be biased like a guitar amp. Also the gain cells are prone to drifting on a regular basis. That's one of the things they fixed with the LCA-2b, also bringing the operating temp down. The 2B is more stable then the 2A. Honestly, I wouldn't kick either one out of bed but if given the choice for the same amount of cash, I'll take the 2A even though it costs a bit more to run.

If we're talking mix-comp I like STC-8 and Drawmer 1969...actually I usually prefer the 1969.

If we're talking guitar-sub the Manley ELOP is way cool!
