Go for it immediately !!!
One of the most ineviatable parts of any studio setup.
Take TD 4, as you'll need at least 2 sterao pair.

I always wanted one, but I never got round to buying one.

If you want a plugin to control dynamics and transients - I would suggest Ohmforce's Predatohm. I can't remember the last time a made a track which didn't have several instances of it running - great for increasing the dynamic range of percussive instruments.

How does it compare to Sony Transient Modulator? Have you compared?

Another satisfied customer...

Just got a TD2 a couple months back. In fact, the first day I hooked it up, I had to track drums. The drummer I was recording hit his snare like a pussy. So, I decided to try multing the snare pre out to my new transient designer. I turned the attack all the way up and the sustain all the way down and mixed that in with my original snare signal. I couldn't believe it! It actually made him sound like he was consistently nailing the snare drum. I love it!

I love the fact that itΒ΄s got no threshold control. That makes it kindasortof
musical, iΒ΄d say. (if that makes sense...)
Keep it in your recording for a while and check how it works on different
sources. YouΒ΄ll be surprised!

No I haven't. In fact, I only learnt of it just now. I'm Logic and have no Powercore, so I probably won't get the chance to compare them either. From looking at the controls I'd say it may be similar. Predatohm is essentially a 4-band compressor which allows you to increase as well as decrease the dynamic range of each of your 4 frequency bands and add distortion if required (which I find rare, but ok on kick drum sometimes).

I hate to be the contrarian here but I didn't like it.

SPL gear has a certain "glassyness" to it and the SPL has it in spades.

I tried all kinds of combinations to smooth it out but for no avail.

Got rid of it months back.

Have not missed it since.

LMFBO.

Who you kidding!!!!????

You LOVE to be the contrarian!!!!

Anyhoo.

I'm stuck in the middle.

This box sure can be useful for a whole bunch of 'band-aid' type tasks... but it's effect on the actual 'source sonics' is pretty much as Thrill described. It's something you start to notice after you get over the "Holy Cow, it's amazing!!!!" period of ownership. At least, that's what happened to me.

I suspect a big part of it is the 'way the magic works' (not threshold dependent), which makes it VERY easy to abuse.... and VERY PERSISTENT sounding even with modest settings.

In my case, once I got hip to what it does to say... the 'body' of a rack tom as it performs it's "magic", it can REALLY start to make you say...

"Ya know what... I can live WITHOUT this thing on here... I'm going back to the old elixirs of EQ. and compression..."

In the end... I'm still using the thing more often than not in mix.

Just not much on close miced drums anymore.

Cheers,

SM.

I used one on brass a couple of weeks back at a studio and it just made me want to buy one! Paralleled for extra attack on some tracks and accross for less on others- back in my own mix room and i look round to see what would do the same for me and i have to say 'nothing'- and they are only Β£250 for a stereo box!! On my shopping list for sure.

I end up using it more during mixing than tracking. It can be amazing on dialing in the kick and snare sound. I would consider it a 'problem solver' kind of tool.

i have the TD2. very easily abused yes. but what would i do without it i dont know. today i am processing drum hits through it--kicks snares and toms. usually i have the attack set to under 3db. any more and it gets unnatural. i keep the sustain at minnimum to tighten up the drum hits. i used to use the drawmer mx40 punch gate which does a similar thing on the transient, though the adjustments are not as useful on it. drawmer came out with another one ds501 that was more adjustable. i would love to give that one a try. doesn't get talked about much..

Transient designer users.

Are you using your Transient designers before or after compression. and why?

I use the transient designer instead of a compressor and EQ. It does enough damage on its' own.

I use it before a fatso or 33609 on kick, snr to take off the pokey edge, otherwise it can be a bit fake.

...Just used a TD for a mix this weekend for the first time. I LOVED IT...it saved me so much time and grief. Used it instead of a compressor...didn't need compression since the sound was already being "shaped" to where I liked it.

Sometimes I'll use it with a comp chasing it just to help shape things a little better, usually a distressor. Most the time, I use it as a mult underneath another track though.

On kick and snare I'm currently favouring a comp first, to even out the dynamics, then the TD, then an EQ.

Using the TD first seems to make the comp work more when you don't want it to, I guess because it puts even more transient into the compressor (if you're boosting the attack). Putting the TD first and boosting the sustain and then compressing can give some cool extreme-compression effect, though.

anyone use transient designer during tracking?

Yes - for tracking 100% of the time.

I never mult. I get the sound the way I want it and print it that way.

It's such an easy tool to use, I can't see any reason to need a backup through the mult.

I've only had mine for a couple months. I must say that I'm a little squeamish about printing too many things with it.

To all who use the Transient Designer, what are some good applications?
