Best Converters=Truest To Source!

All,

What's your opinion on the best 2 channel converters? Mine is the dCS product.

Interestingly enough, you left off the best two, in my opinion: db Technologies and Crane Song...

I added em for ya Brad, but remember, it's one vote only!!!

Any missing ones you folks want to vote for - let me know (privately if you like) and I will add them to this cool poll, (it would obviously be a PITA to list ALL the converters in the world)

what about benchmark?

i shall not vote as there is no "best"... and truest to the source does not necessarily mean best. and what source?

I'll second DB, CraneSong and Benchmark plus I'll add Daniel Weiss, Euphonix and Pacific Microsonics which are all only available factory-direct with no discounts. Of course, you'll never hear about them from dealers.

Posters,

Well, I'm not surprised that Apogee seems to be the most popular(at least at the time of this posting). I wonder if the reason why people have not voted as much for dCS is because their products are probably the most expensive of this whole converter lot.

I think with some of the top converters costing thousands and thousands of dollars - sometimes just for a 2 channel unit, most folks are voteing for the best they know, or ones that they are using that they are happy with.

I could be wrong there of course..

Not really - the Prism Dream line and db Technologies gold stuff are both virtually the same price as the dCS stuff (at least here in the states). I've never cared for the dCS stuff myself and would rate it third among the three listed above.

It's why they make red cars and blue cars...

In all fairness, is it safe to assume we are mostly talking a to d, and not d to a, and d to d, etc....???? ( Euphinox has some very cool FUCTIONAL gear, but a/d-wise would sway my vote)...

All,

So should I take this as people think that Apogee converters are better than everything else on the market? How about Apogee converters up against Pro Tools HD(especially at 44.1). Further opinons?

I'd like to see Aurora and Meitner/EMM Labs on this list. Aurora because it's great for the money. My vote goes to EMM Labs.

As far as the high end market on converters (specifically AD), Ive worked with Prismsound and can not understand how anyone would compare apogee to some of the other 'Truer' (as the title of the thread indicates) converters that are being produced. We A/Bd an AD8000 against pair of Prismsound AD...absolutely no contest at all...
I own apogee converters and love them but they are not the 'truest' by far.

you are right, Stitch.
Apogee has a colour to it that you can hear.
of course this thread was from the very beginning of GS and was just resuscitated.

IT is NOT relaive... other than taste (which IS relative)

I see all sorts of arguments, many of which argue the merits of the fact that Prism and Apoge are neck and neck in this poll.

Many argue Iimplied) that poll itself is flawed because peole vote for what they have and/orwhat they can afford... bit the question was for the "Truest Conveter" and THAT is the flaw.

True to what?

The source? Who hear REALLY hears the source? Of what? Through what?

Tape? Isn't that just another flavor, GP9, 456, Apogee, Prism?

Keeping is positive, it should bre more question of which convertor seems to yield the best results and why (since that is truly subjective)

IMO

Unless you have used everyone of theses units, how can you give an informed answer. Then this is merely what people have used and like.

This time i will not mention Sony PCM701ES heh.
My guess the Benchmark is the best, because it's a converter without any jitter added.
And during conversion that's also very, very important.
I would use that one to convert old analogue archives (if they still exist today) to a 24bits recorder.
And its very cheap............................

Are there really that many of us that have actually heard all the converters listed let alone taken the time to do detailed comparisons? I'm guessing not. I would bet most people just buy the best they can afford based on recommendations and reviews and just move on. That's what I did. When I was back in the market for new converters I just bought from the same company because I was happy with the sound I had and the product had features that I found useful.

I am fortunate to have compared dCS 905/955, Prism ad2/da2 and ADA-8XR, Lavry AD122/DA-924,DAD AX24 and EMM Labs ADC8/DAC8. When I did a shootout with all of these converters, I was looking for PCM AND DSD compatibility. If the Lavry 122 could do DSD, I would have bought it. The next best sounding PCM and the best sounding DSD converters are the EMM Labs. Since the Pacific Microsonics converters are no longer in production, it's a moot point now. The only drawback to the Lavry Golds are it's only 2 channel. I felt the EMM Labs fit well into my situation (DSD/PCM surround and stereo) even though they were over $17k!

Bruce

Brad

Personally Ive used or owned at least 7 of the above mentioned list. It helps to have worked at a studio equipment rental company with a transfer room.
If I could afford them, Id take the prismsound converters...but Id really dig hearing the EMMs...

-on a side note-

many hit records have been done with 888s so ultimately its more about what you do with the gear than a brand name.
