thanx for response
back to the main subject of this thread - comparison between brent averill, chandler and api 512 (+550 eq). which one would you prefer on vocals? how about the api 550 eq?
Give Brent a call or e-mail. I bought a 1272 from him and I remember him telling me (I hope I get this right) that the Neve stuff tends to shave off transients while the API stuff doesn't.
So, the Neve stuff makes stuff like guitars sound bigger. While recording drums to tape would work best with the API. I don't remember where vocals fall into this equation.
Myself, I too want to expand beyond having just a 1272 for my home project studio. I am considering the Great River 2NV.
For vocals, I prefer the Avalon 2022 pre over the Chandler 1272 in most cases. Just seems to have more clarity, air and depth to it on vocals; warmer. Since it's dual mono I also use for overheads, acoustic guitars in stereo, grand piano etc.
But for drums, guitars, rock vocals the chandler is hard to beat..thumbsup
