Tracking Studio for 200.000

I am building a studio for a german band and would love to hear some of your opinions :

It`s gonna be a non-commercial studio, mainly used for tracking.
Most of the tracks will be recorded live with lots of inputs : large drumkit, 2 guitars, acoustic guitar, bass, keyboards, scratch vocals,..... so there will be about 32 - 40 live inputs.
Overall Budget for the studio is about 150 - 200.000 Euros.

What`s your approach for a tracking studio ?
Would you rather go for a mid priced console and invest the saved money for more outboard pre`s or buy a larger console with the thought of upgrading to mixing in the studio as well in the future ?
Did anyone ever worked on an Amek Galileo ?
I`ve seen a used one pretty cheap with 24 Galileo channels. Is that Rupert Neve designed mic pre any good ?
Of course it`s not compareable to classic Neve gear, but is it useable for stuff like Toms, Percussion, ...... ?

What other consoles come to your mind that would fit in the budget ?

thanks for your opinion

Don´t forget to add a real good acoustic environment and a couple of good sounding speakers. Something like http://www.stageaccompany.com/produc...er/master.html
My vote would go for to skip a big console. To expensive, to much maintenance. If the studio is setup for a band, choose the easiest way to record. Less gear, best quality.

Maybe a big Protools rig and tons of outboard. A small console for monitoring purpose. Neumann, Blue Microphones, Helios, Pultecs, API, Summit, SSL FX 383 & 384, Tube-Techs, Chandler EMI´s, SE C2. Go for the vintage sound stuff. Skip all the cheap crap.

I didn`t mention all the gear around the console ( speakers, acoustic treatment, cabeling, AC, .... ) as i am not worrying about that right now ( besides the money it`s gonna costs of course ).

Recording medium is gonna be a PT HD rig, forgot that to mention.

I'm with Neve Sucks! - if this is for one band, what is the point of a big console besides stroke off factor? So much outboard gear will do whatever you want, tons of different shades, lots of options, bragging rights too for the kind of bread you're talking about. It doesn't seem to make sense to invest half assed in a big console.

if it is not comercial studio and you don't have to "impress" castummers you might find an amzing sounding boarrd like mci or amek motzart etc. for less than 30000 with all cabeling and patchbay than invest therest in outboard preamps to add diffrent flavours.
as other said don't underlook the acoustic treatment it can cost you much more than you might think!

No console. Outboard specifically targeted at a chosen task will yield far better results.

A-Range for kick and snare, API for toms, Neve for electric guitar, etc, or whatever your specific taste. No single console can hope to compete in a captive, non commercial situation like yours.

Just a thought.

You could buy all the aforementioned preamps, but how about picking up an inexpensive live sound console as well specifically to deal with cue sends? If you are concentrating on tracking, then a comprehensive monitoring system could be a killer option.

OTOH, if you want a studio board, then get one. Especially if like me you can't stand recording & mixing via a mouse.

For that sort of $$$

You could GET!

32Ch Baby V Neve for mixing... no slouch in the mixing department!

24 i/o PTHD w/ 192..

2" 16 track for the tape 'thang'

and lotsa of tasty mics, pres, EQ's and compressors.

A decent accoustic fit out

and all u need then is the talent and skill to make it work!

Let us know the progress!

PEACE

thanks for all your answers so far.

I am personally down with the "no console" idea, that`s how my own studio is set up, and that`s how this studio would be designed if it was my own.

It`s just weird how most people still think that the size of the console is equal to the size of the studio.
I guess I have to talk a lot to the band to conveince them to go the "console only for monitoring" way.
