"Real" subwoofer recommendation?

I'm looking for a recommendation on a real subwoofer, one that goes below 20Hz with ease and will put out enough SPL to keep up with ATC 300s in a large (8,500 cubic feet) control room. For 5.1 use.

Plenty of loud, pro subs out there, but most do not go down to below 20Hz +/-3 dB.

thanks,

Greg

hey greg,

how about the bag-ends stuff?

btw don't you have the focal twins with a sub? how do you like that setup.

Hi,

I'm also inclined to recommend Genelec 7073A. Also 7071A might be enough but hard to tell without trying first.

BTW, one thing about the tests linked by Petrus (I know because I did them heh), all Genelecs have a thermal protection circuit which kicked in during long sine sweeps. With typical real world signals protection won't kick in, i.e. they will deliver much more clean SPL.

I have Genelec 7071A with ADAM S3A, and the ADAMs turn themselves off much earlier than the 7071A. Actually the sub has never needed the thermal protection so far, even with the bigger main monitors I used to have.

Basically a pair of 7071 is the same as one 7073, more flexible positioning, "stereo" bass, more expencive.

Interestingly PMC XB3s are one large Volt driver in a big box while the Genelec is a bunch of smaller Volt drivers in a big box. Both seem to reach 17Hz in room.

No Volt drivers in Genelec subwoofers, if that's what you meant?

That is what I meant, mostly because Volt lists Genelec as customers on their website and bass drivers is all they make.

But obviously you are closer to the truth and I stand corrected!

Volts website hasn't been changed in years. So that could be very old information, but I know Quested still uses them and for the price of 2 vs1115s....

My boss uses a Velodyne and its great. He runs it with a bypass so he can monitor with and without sub. Its super punchy so its great for pop mixes. I have the Blue Sky system and while it might not be high end, the sub is really great and goes very low. I've done some dance mixing and the super low end thump translates well.

I auditioned a REL Brittania B1 and JL Audio fathom f112 recently for the mastering room.

The fathom is incredibly tight and detailed, can hold a convincing organ tone like nothing else I know, and in my room at least goes to 16-17Hz.

The REL was a disappointment, especially after all the positive things I'd heard about it.
