EAB/Geiling console

hey

im still on the search for an affordable small format console. a calrec sale felt through - now im offered a desk by EAB/Geiling.
its all discrete. has 8 mic inputs and 4 stereo line ins. basic eq on all channels. 4 aux sends. the console looks like this:

sonicworld consoles

has anyone used one of these beasts? it looks very promising and the company is highly respected here in germany. i would use this desk for summing and some basic sweetening with the eqs. im doing folk/rock music. all acoustic instruments and im looking for a bit more colour and weight in my mixes.
so has anyone used one of these? any feedback is welcome!

i guess the most important question is:
are there still spare parts in case any module fails?

Looks sexy as anything!! Never seen or used one though.

As far as parts, I wouldn't think you'd get a problem. All discrete =no unobtanium op amps in case you needed/wanted to replace with originals. Makes me think you shouldn't find stuff in there which you can't service now..........

Someone with definite knowledge please??!

I'd try and listen to it first if poss, but looks very very nice indeed!

I have never had a chance to put my hands on EAB stuff.
But their reputation is good for sure.

Discrete broadcasting gear from that era has never disappointed me so far..

Good luck.

well...i bought it anyways...i'm just a slut for this old broadcast stuff :-)
an all discrete board with eq on every channel and 9 mic pres (76db) cant hurt. best thing...i just found out its build in danner format. so i can swap modules if i like . it comes straigt from the engineer who designed these boards and sadly passed away a few years ago. i will pick it up on saturday and let you know how it sounds.

gratz!
this little console will blow you away honestly!!, the trafo's they used are best build quality ever, topping 200khz, the sound is up there with the best of the best, i've had a 40 channel version of the 600series and some friends of mine have a few of these smaller boards, its a long kept secret and there arent that many build of them, i believe its build by TBG btw not EAB unless EAB build the first version, later versions 500 and 600 series are def TBG, the EQ's are amaaazing, often enough just running the signal through the channels will make things sound more pleasant and you cant go wrong on using the EQ's , they keep sounding good even when doing crazy stuff, ..the mic-pres sound incredible as well and this stuff is build to last 10.000 years, ...goodluck with it

correction, sistronics, TAB , EAB, TBG all build these consoles,

i picked it up today (couldn't wait). its even better than i thought....
22 channels. eq on every channel. eight compressors. every single knob is stepped (except aux sends). i have never touched a better feeling console...seriously. this is a tank. completely discreet. and the best thing is the condition. not a single scratch. its basically brand new. as if the guy build it and put it in a time capsule for me to pick up. i will post some pics tomorrow.

That's the Geiling /TBG 4 band EQ. E610 Fa

completely discrete circuits
4 band inductor based Eq
All switches of the highest quality for frequency and level ( level reliably calibrated and you have recall) No pots.
Beautiful sound.
The midrange reminds me of the Chandler Curvebender

However there are no transformers inside the EQ ,
inputs and outputs of the module are unbalanced.
The Haufe transformers for each Eq are usually sitting inside of the main frame.
You need those transformers whenever you want to insert the EQ somewhere else outside of the console.
The incredible Haufe input transformer ( goes up to 200 KHz) brings the level down and the output transformer brings it up again.

I know the Eqs well because they are the channel Eqs in my console.

I have seen these Eqs on ebay offered with the wrong transformers. That will sound different and in those consoles there is a power stabilization in each of the channels that is also very important for dynamic and impulses.
So beware:
without those transformers and and the console inherent power stabilization those
Eqs might disappoint you or at least won't sound as good as inside the console.

Don't worry you have them in their original infrastructure.

The transformers of the mic/line pre amps are not necessarily Haufe.
Older modules often have Picatron transformers.
There are also mixed versions with a Picatron mic transformer and a Haufe line tranny.
It's easy to take off the back-cover of the mic pre amp and find out.
1 screw and then simply slide it off and then you can see the transformer brands.

The console sounds great, open and clear and the transformers give it a certain punch.
In my tests listeners located the sound between GML and API.
It is on the transparent side but it sounds more rock'n roll than the GML, which is still a little more transparent.
It has more upper treble than the API and more bottom but typical for a German broadcast console it leaves the midrange neutral.
When we made a recording with my V72s and needed more channels we tested what pre amp came closest. The TBG was similar frequency wise but had faster transients and sounded harder.
It sound fresh and punchy.

In bigger TBG consoles the signal travels through lots of transformers.
The good news is that all listeners thought that it sounded great going through all stages when we tested to bypass stage by stage.

You have found a little treasure there.
Congratulations!
Those consoles used to be really, I mean really expensive and it's only due to the fact that they were built in small numbers and never been seen in commercial studios but in broadcast studios only that the the prices are not though the roof.
The 40 channel console of a friend of mine cost about 1.500 000 DM in the mid 80s.
There are not so many people who have used them and know about the high end quality.
The German broadcast always demanded and ordered no compromise quality components ( price no issue).
Unfortunately the started to throw away great sounding equipment like their tube mics whenever something new was developed.
However in this case of the TBG/ Geiling console strangely enough they ordered consoles with discrete circuits, tons of transformers and inductor based Eqs at a time when the rest of the private studio world was already full of MCIs and SSLs .

My consoles were built in 1992.
I wondered why they ordered a typical mid 70s discrete design in the 90s and I was told that the Bavarian Broadcast already had a number of these desks in their mobile recordings trucks and as the engineers loved them they ordered some more.

I am very happy with their decision.

Good luck with your console,
Best Peter

Hi Melvin,

I have caught a flue last week, that's the reason why I had some time time to post on the forum.
I hope everything is fine in Nieuw Amsterdam.

Please send my best wishes to the whole family.
