no mention of Maselec MLA-2, MLA-3?
haven't heard anyone mention the Alpha Compressor either.

current mastering analog rack here has

OCL-2 w/ custom sidechain filters
2500
Manley Vari-Mu mstr w/ t-bar+custom hi-pass
MLA-3
MPL-2 (the maselec mstr limiter w/ desser)

lots of flavors... mmm, tasty!

The SSL Busscomp is fantastic, congrats on that one! The standard settings for 2buss (imho) are 1:2, 30ms attack (sometimes 10ms if I need to calm down the transients instead of getting maximum punch) and 100rls (sometimes slower if it´s a slow song or you don´t want it to rock) and about 2-4dB GR. If you feel it pushes the lowbass away too much - that´s the right spot. Leave it there and instead of raising the threshold again, use an EQ after the comp to bring the bass back up again.

Did you end up keeping the XDesk? Andi Koch told me you got one, he´s getting one for me to demo this month.....

Rock on!
Pat

You'd be thinking Dual Atomic Squeezebox, Neve 33609 [no suffix], Fairchild 670 [99% impossible to have in great condition unless you're John McBride], Thermionic Culture "Phoenix", STC-8, VT-7, or something in that range.

DBX? "Safe Sound"?... why not FMR while you're at it?

Thats the new list of low end gear:
-Safe sound dynamic toolbox
-Mohog 1176 (too cheap! you can make it at home)
-TK Audio BC1
-Buzz SOC 1.1
-DBX 160SL
-Daking FETIII
....Any other?

OK, which would mean you'd have to have the 2254 in the top 2?

My opinion is that they're different beasts, and I actually much prefer the 33609 for my applications.

From reading this thread...

...I'm torn between API 2500, Neve 33609, Cranesong STC-8, Thermionic Pheonix, and the upcoming Tonelux products. In true gearslutz fashion, to be honest, I will probably own 2, but it's really tough to even pick 2 !!

A superb piece of equipment.
+1. That's my favourite tube compressor too.

Yes, the 8900 is my alternative choice too.

I love my STC-8, amazing for a number of things and the Urei 1178 is the one for squashing drums!

For "value" in a stereo tube compressor, it's hard to beat the Peavey VC/L-2. Really a nice sounding unit. Though getting difficult to find.
