Umm... 200 series thoughts!

Love the 500's
but never used the 200 series. Anyone out there have one?
How do they stack up, 212,225? And uh... whats the piont?
500's live comfortably in and out of the studio, why would you need anything else? am I missing something?

My thought exactly..."why?".

The 500 series is great for portability, while the weakness is that manufacturers have to sacrifice something to fit the guts into such a small module.

So the plan seems to be, "Hey, let's make it SMALLER and sacrifice more!"

...but, I've never heard it to judge it. Does the 200 have something the 500 doesn't?

Is this move one to make the 500 series toys even more accessible to the lower end?

I've spec'd some lovely portable rigs with 24x 212 pre's in 4 RU going to a RADAR -V [Nyquist] returning to 3x API 8200s with a 7800 master section. Full on 24 track recording in 12 RU... 48 track system in 1x 24 RU case.

200 Series modules are mostly meant for console use... but being able to fit 12 mic-pre's in 2 RU? ... priceless!!!

200 series ain't low end by any stretch. I like the 512 a little better than the 212 but it's splitting hairs, they are both great. Where the 200 series shines is in the compressor and filter set, monstrously good and not matched in the 500 series (yet). I haven't heard the gates or the DI but they are well recommended by others.

The new 527 is supposed to be the 225 comp in a 500 format but I haven't heard it.

I would love to have a couple 200 series racks of filters and comps.
