So the aurora came in today and i've got to say is one of the baddest compressors i've used. i just got it today and only got to use it on vox and on the mix. VERY VERY VERY impressed! who else has one? i'm curious how others are using it.

thanks for the recommend tony and good work to aurora!

definitely. man, the opto section on this thing is killing me on vox! attack around 9/10 o'clock, auto release, and a touch of make up gain is blowing my mind. ok, gotta go play some more....heh

Mmmmmm. This piece is #1 on my outboard list. I'll probably buy it just based on my experience with the GTQ2. I'd love to hear some samples too! Please keep us updated on what you love about it and how it compares to other pieces. Also, do you think this as a desert island compressor or more of a specialist? Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

i don't want to hype it too much cause i've only had it for a day but with my experience with it so far it may be my new 1st pic on the mix. which means i may need to buy another to go on vox. heh not sure what you mean by "specialist" but so far it seems to handle every task i've thrown at it amazingly.

Congratz! I can only imagine how good it must sound
I think he means as some compressors are generally used for certain sources, is this an all-round compressor or does it work particularly well on vocals?

That's what I mean. Since it would be the first hardware comp that I buy, I wonder if it can be considered a great general purpose piece. Well, mainly bass and vocals for tracking and mixing, and likely a lot of drum buss while mixing.

This comp has a fet and opto action.

This comp looks real sweet

Is this a fet on Left and an opto on the other channel, or does both left and right have the choice of a fet or opto action both sides?

Also, if both channels have fet/opto, can a signal go through the fet and opto on right, and likewise fet and opto on the left channel.

I am a little confused- and the info blurbs are not very detailed and specific. Please someone explain- if it is 2 channels FET or 2 channels opto optional (useful for mix) - or combination opto one channel fet other channel (useful tracking) I feel an itch coming on.

Also- what are the characteristics of the opto and the FET?

Thanks

two channel comps i currently have are:
alan smart c2
api 2500
crane song stc 8
shadow hills mastering compressor
aurora audio gtc 2

to the other question... each channel has an opto and fet section. they can be used seperate or in combo mode which puts both circuits on the same signal. i believe passes through the opto first...geoff? also a stereo mode. i'm about to start an 'indie" mix tonight or in the morning and plan to use it all over the place. i'll see if the artist is cool with me posting some samples.

Hi GJ

The two channels are identical. You can put either side into opto, FET, or combined (Opto followed by FET).

This unit is a gentle giant... it's not a grunge machine, I designed it to be really musical and to enhance the sound.

It follows our design philosphy of all discrete transistor class A circuitry and our own custom wound transformers.

heh

Well, I got to admit. The Aurora Preamps are so good, I got the urge and bought the compressor as well. Got it coming in this week. Can't wait to A/B it with my other high end comps (neve, api, focusrite, ssl, pendulum, urei, etc) and use it on the 2bus and tracking.

Geoff, please make a kick ass stereo EQ. at least 5 bands, filters hi and low, please please. With all stepped pots for volume and freq selection. I would love to have a stereo Aurora eq as such in my studio. And most importantly with Aurora Transformers in and out.

Thanks for making some killer gear Geoff!thumbsup

Thanks Tony - and yes, I am extremely excited about this unit. No yoga class is going to take that away. I hope it is out soon.

I think we'll probably see it sometime in the summer.

WOW. It looks like the perfect layout. I assume he is sticking to the tonal character of the Aurora. If so, I can only say WOW.
