Help for 2 Mix from ProTools

So, I'm recording and mixing a pop/r&b record in my own project studio (Mix+) and in another bigger and cooler project type room (PTHD3, 96 I/O). I've always been a mix in the box guy, but only because I've never had budget to experiment with other options. Either way I'll be mixing back to 44.1/24 bit PT for mastering, but do you guys have any suggestions or things that work well for you in a similar set up? Having never had the opportunity to play with them, would something like the SSL mix bus compressor, or the HEDD, or a Manley box give me something I can't come close to in the box? I assume like Analog Channel or other "emulation" plugs I should build the mix through such a box?

And on a similar note, what about similar boxes for compression on elements of the mix... i.e. Distressors for the kick and snares, etc.

Thanks for your suggestions...

There have been a couple of threads about this in the past.

Here and here.

There are probably a couple of others, if you search on "Pro Tools Mixes" or something similar.

there really is absolutely nothing that analog hardware
toys will offer you that you can't acheive from entirely
inside the box. don't get caught up in all the voodoo of
you having to have all this expensive gear. just develop
your chops inside the box - in time you will blow away
anything you could do in some big downtown studio.

I'll have to say that I don't agree with that statement. While I think that good results are obtainable in the box, there are certain qualities that are difficult to achieve with plugs versus hardware. A great mastering job can help out immensely (often hardware).

Ooooooh! Flameworthy stuff..!?

I'm afraid I can't agree with you here. Believe me, I would truly like to agree with you because it's certainly a lot more convenient and cost effective, but good quality analogue outboard signal processors just sounds better to me for certain stages of the recording chain (particularly tracking and 2-buss processing). Plug-ins are absolutely cool for other things (eg. Sony Oxford, reverbs, sfx etc).

Not saying you can't get a totally acceptable result with a 100% DAW session, but I'm still not convinced you'll get a great result...

I think that's inaccurate info.

It's a matter of taste, but analogue hardware sounds different to plug-in's, simply by virtue of being different it offers something else.

The truth is, it often offers something of higher quality.

I think people can produce excellent results either way, but certain types of music demand certain tools.

Yep, rubbish!

HEDD seems to be one of the popular ways to go.
It wouldn't hurt to have SSL, Smart, Api or Distressor compressors to hand.

Hmmmm..

A Cranesong Hedd for use during tracking (as converter and mix monitor D/A)

Then in use on the master fader while mixing (here is where the tape simulation comes in)

It will also provide better clock for the whole rig if hooked up right..

Whats diferent on this project? Extra budget?

and when you get there I'll hire you .... make some million selling hits and with that money buy SSL. Once purchased fire every engineer / technician over there and turn the place into a parkinglot. That way we can finally convince Jon to sell that 9k of his and buy a ProControl.

Sorry, I haven't been back in a few days...

Jules, yeah, it's definately budget. And I've done in the box mixes for years, including some decent sounding indie projects. (Well, they sound decent to me...) I'd just like to take it up a level for this one. A good chunk of that is going to be the luxury of time for the mixes, but I'm also adding some gear to my rig as well. I've got a Lucid clock on the way, another farm card or two and a new monitoring chain that will help both tracking (ooh, talkback button!) and monitoring clarity (better than my Mackie 3204 line mixer). And as I won't be able to take the whole PT rig to mastering as I've heard people talking about (studio in LA, mastering in Nashville), I'm wondering how much better the addition of a HEDD or something would help significantly over Analog Channel, etc. Not to mention, the fact that I've never used one...
