I remember some videotaped sessions, where the sound captured by the videocam's mics blew away the mix from the drumkit's multimicced setup. Go figure.

If you have the chance, try an AEA88 as overheads plus some kick mic (m88, fet47..): Done.
All you'd need is a great drummer with a great well tuned kit, in a great sounding room.

Some nice lists!

Mine would be:

OH's - U67
Kick IN - Beta 52
Kik Out - NS10
SN TP - Tab SM57
SN BM - Manley Reference (black)
Toms - U89
HiHat - SM7B
Ride - 451CK
Trash Mic - SM7B
Rooms - Manley Gold Reference (baffled omni)
Talkback - M49 (omni)

All through 1073's except the rooms and OH... those go to a Focusrite ISA110.

I've been doing R88 #69 over the drums behind the drummer facing into the skins, el Diablo #001 8 inches outside the kick drum. If I have the R88 over the piano I use two R84s as underheads in front of the kit, which is a fail-safe technique for me. Fletcher's Tony Merrill'd SM69fet sometimes makes an overhead appearance if I need a brighter sound with more crack. Mono room mic is either a T-FunkUSA ELA M251E or Josephson C720, both of which get compressed liberally to the recorder.

I recently had the opportunity to use two Brauner VM1KHE's over the drums. Jazzier stuff, lots of ghost notes and jagged fills. They were set to omni, and I did not need to use other mics. Not only was the stereo image great (the mics are 26 numbers apart and have much different low-mid character from one another)...but I could hear EXACTLY how high each drum and cymbal was off of the floor. I've never experienced microphones that did that in such a real fashion. If I didn't know where the mics were pointing, I could still tell you where they were pointing...

I don't think I've mixed a drumset the same way twice since I started getting closer to the sounds I like with my mixing....a lot of the same mics are used, but I try to focus on whose wedding it is, as JJP put it, and I try to mic-place and mix for the song and for the artist. I couldn't use C1's for overheads like I do for hard rock, for jazz knowing that 2 ribbons on overheads is what I prefer for jazz....just my opinion.

I can't just pick out one dream mic setup unless someone asks specifically for what genre...which case, for jazz or something light, it would probably be just 3 or 4 mics and for the heavy stuff I go for that David Ben thing and get tons of attack on toms, kick and snare and I literally use as many as 15 inputs.

Would love to hear more dream setups though, some good readin' in this thread so far while very different as well from post to post...it's awesome!!

U67 > Snare
421's > toms
C24 > OH
Coles 4038's > Room

into 70's Calrec pres (pq10s and/or 1061's)

On my recent project...I could not believe the sounds we got with this setup:

1 Coles 4038 above the snare drum...just above the drummers head.
1 Lawson L47 tube mic in front of the kit...about chest height.
1 pair of cascade fathead ribbons in a stereo pattern about 12 ft from the kit...compressed with a pair of daking limiters.
1 beyer 201 on the snare....pointed across the head.

Zero EQ...just those 5 tracks in a mix sound awesome !!

I think my producer only used the snare mic to send to a plate reverb on some of the songs...I still cannot get over how punchy and cool the drums sounded with JUST that coles and 47 in the mix !!

Slingerland radio king drums...26" bass, 13, 16 toms, old rogers snare. Bosphurus cymbals...and an great drummer.

I think all the mics went to daking preamps...except the coles was into an old altec tube thing...and then to a la-4 compressor.

I used to think I would not have an amazing drum sound on my records until I could afford to use tons of mics.

I would love to track someday at blackbird....can't even imagine how to stay focused with all that gear around !!

awesome

some great posts already, interesting to see how the sm7 keeps coming up.

It's really heartening in this day of unlimited track counts to hear of people resorting to the raw basics to get great sounds. I couldn't believe how great the three mic technique was the first time I tried it and how effortless it was to mix those drums in the track..infinetly more rewarding than 16 tracks of phasey top and bottom mics covered in triggers!

Keep them coming.

Lol - how do we know they didn't have something on the kick?...totally messin....

Anyway, anyone seen that new EV mic pak, the PLDK5 kit? $399 for a kick drum mic and 4 mics for toms and snare, all supercardioid and with clips!! 3 packs showed up at work about a week ago and I'm insanely interested. I always liked the ND468's for toms(the ones with swivel heads) and pretty much all EV mics in general. I use an ND767 for my live vocals and when I try something else I always want to go back. So anyway, check em out.

Electro-Voice PL DK5 Drum Mic Pack and more Percussion Microphones at GuitarCenter.com.

it depends on the kit, the room, the drummer and the style of music. But for a minimal setup with all these factors covered very well you could go like this:

kick: RE20 in front trough an api pre
snare: md421 trough api pre
overhead: coles 4038 (for a dark sound) or an KM84 like microphone (for a more bright sound) trough in recordman setup a clean pre or a nevesk pre.

room: DPA sdc or ldc or similar in omni trough a clean or nevesk pre with some limiting on it

OH's - Neumann U67
Kick - Neumann U47 Fet
Snare - AKG C451
Mono Room - AEA R84

Use this combination a lot for the simpler stuff, works a treat!

I know what you mean - but if you REALLY think that I have doubts about your judgementheh

Seriously - those mic's have big limiters on them - so what you're getting is a smashed room mic. Quite useful in some cases - but certainly not usable as the whole drum sound since they have no "welly"

well, maybe "blew away" is a bit of an exageration, but it was a pro videcam with sennheiser mkh shotgun mics (as mostly all pro videcams are setup with)
