Neumann M149 or Brauner VMA'VM1? Or Wagner U47?

Which one would you buy if you were in my position?
I'm looking for hi end vocal microphone...

Does anyone have any vocal audio samples taken with that particular microphones (raw microphone recording)?

I'm looking for the sound like Michael Buble!

Thanks!

All your mentioned mic's are completely different!

It's like asking what should I get "a crane, a plan or a earthmover".

Sorry...

Sinatra often used a handheld AKG C535 in the studio but that doesn't mean
the same mic is the best for Michael Buble.

You need to find your own recording chain for your voice.
That includes the right mic for your voice too.

Hopefully, Gunter Wagner will find some parts and make several more in the future.
Brauner VMA is excellent choice among other mentioned here.

I'm already on Gunter's waiting list in case he does... Fingers crossed. The way I look at it, if by some miracle he gives me the some day, I'll have had more time to set aside the $$ for the mic. If he doesn't, it's always good to have an extra six grand lying around - just in case.

Thinking about building maybe five or six U47s with real Neumann heads and NOS VF14 tubes from the parts I have left. But haven't decided if it's worth it, these would not exactly be inexpensive microphones...

Quality costs. I'd love a U47 clone/copy whatever.

My personal opinion is that the Brauner outclasses the M149.

Yes. The Brauner kicks the M149's ass up and down the street.

My Wagner U47w will be here in April. I was lucky enough to use one before I bought it but once I heard one I ordered it that day.

The Brauner VM1 is slightly different than the U47w but is one of the few mics that I've heard that also caused the same desire to buy it as soon as I heard it.

The M149 is a top quailty mic. You really can't go wrong with it. I think it is a very good value for the cost.

Any of the 3 is a great choice for your might locker.

my 2c: VM1 is a fairly unusual tube mic, if you've never heard it or the rest of the Brauner "clean" line, you'll have to demo it first. it's not a vocal mic you can buy on recommendation or samples alone (well -- none really are, but VM1, being different in character from the well-known staples, more so).

As with any gear, taste might have critical role.
Brauner is unusually great mic to my ears.

Wrong on all counts. It's NOt top quality, and the value is terrible. They're charging $5,000 for basically a $1700 mic.

I second this!

Those Sennheiser mic's aren't up to snuff!

They should bury the names "Neumann" and "Telefunken" instead of ruining the legacy.

It's all about marketing and has nothing to do with really good sounding mic's.

The only current Neuheiser mic I would buy is the U87 and no TeleUS at all.
They should have establish their own brand like Dirk Brauner did. That's what
Neumann and AKG did in the past. It's all about credibility and inventive talent...

I'm sure Georg Neumann is turning in his grave!

Good night gearslutz!

Nah- he has been reincarnated - from polished sophisticated urbane german engineer with expensive expectations into the land east of Ninbin NSW- he has metamorphosised into a certain aussie battler punching out mikes with an eerily similar vibe.

Anyone who knew Georg Neumann- did he have the knack for uh- rubbing people a certain way- if so that would prove my hypothesis beyond reasonable doubt.

I can agree regarding the new telefunken mics, but the M149 is an awesome mic. While the U87 is a workhorse, the M149 is far superior. It is top notch on vocals and other sources. It is well worth the 5k asking price. It destroys my AKG c12 and is often preferred over my Gefell um900. Also, it sounds better than the U47s with which I've had experience.

It is a great modern LDC.

Interesting. I am thinking of getting one of the Telefunken mics (C12, U47 or ELAM251) in the not to distant future.

I currently have the M149 and find it a bit hard sounding (for lack of a better word), but with a little EQ i think it becomes better.

I think Im looking for an alternative that is a bit rounder in the edges, but still is clear, detailed and articulate.

Personally, I would not pay more than 3,500 for a new Telefunken U47. 1) It does not use a Neumann k47/49 capsule. 2) The V-14k is cheaper than the better alternate, EF-14 tube.
Basically, part for part the new Telefunken uses good but much cheaper parts than a Bradley U47, which sells for 4,700 (almost half of the Telefunken asking price).

I am sure the Telefunken is a decent U47, but Telefunken is selling a mic that cost half 3/4 to 1/2 of what the Bradley clone costs to make for almost 8,500. To me, it's sleazy marketing to use the "Telefunken" name to jack prices threw the roof.

I would look around for more accurate U47 clones that actually give you the real Neumann K47/49 capsule. Or, buy a used Telefunken, if you can find one for 3k.
